Jan Vertonghen

I've followed Vertonghen since he was 20-ish. He is a good central defender and his attitude is admirable, but I'm not sure if he's Barça material.
He's better than Fontàs that's for sure, but then again he ain't no canterano.

I do think he's good enough for us. He's strong, excellent on the ball, he's not slow and he's versatile enough to play as a left back or a defensive midfielder, apart from central defender. He was the best player of the Eredivisie, though that's not much of an achievement. He would suit us, I think. He only lacks concentration at times, but that's not strange if you play in the Eredivisie. Some clubs don't even reach the Ajax goal, so it's understandable. He wouldn't be too expensive, because his contract expires in a year, so he might be relatively cheap too.

I would prefer Javi Martinez but he would be much cheaper and allow us to go after a big name striker.

Javi Martinez is a no no as a Centre Back! He is slow, clumsy, not tough at all and gets dribbled way way too easily! I agree with Jesse1509, Jan Vertonghen would be a perfect match for us and would cost less than half of martinez! They are both similar age but martinez is a CM who can play CB, we already have mascherano with those qualities!
I think we need to buy a proper tough, tall centre back who can also play the ball and is good with his feet... that is Jan Vertonghen IMO!

The Ajax team was in barcelona yesterday for dinner to celebrate winning the season. Vertonghen left earlier to go watch the tottenham game with his manager.

He was at their game against Fulham with his agent yesterday. Arsenal went for him too but couldn't guarantee him first team football and Spurs offered higher wages.

Fuck me-why would someone want to go to Spurs over Barca?

London is a cool city and the Premiership has the biggest media push in Europe...He's openly talked about Spurs to Dutch media so I think it's just a matter of time...Strange in a footballing sense but that's probably why it was going to be either Spurs or Arsenal in the Premiership

Vertonghen is not our first, second or third priority so it is understandable that we are not as interested in him as Spurs or Arsenal are.

I have no doubt that he would move to us had we shown a bigger interest.

Ajax manager Frank de Boer has tried to tell Barcelona about him time and time again but it just seems like he isn't on our list for whatever reason.
