He was completely flat footed and instead of pressuring or attempting to clear the ball he simply stuck a foot out without even caring what would happen, most likely because he didn't even expect the ball to get to him.

It was extremely poor defending. I don't see how you can look at that and say it was just bad luck.

What? Every defender tries to block a shot by getting his foot to it. He didn't connect properly and it went in, nothing more than that. Or do you want him to pressure the ball?

Is there something inherently wrong with pressuring the ball? Letting the striker take the shot and trying to lackadaisically stop it with your foot is rarely a better option than running in and blocking the shot the way Mascherano did in the first half. Or do you disagree? Because if so, I'd like to point out the result of the two plays and would question you what the difference between them was.
