Also remember his tackle that saved a goal.... well I say tackle was more of a lie down on front of ball but it stopped goal!!
Is there something inherently wrong with pressuring the ball? Letting the striker take the shot and trying to lackadaisically stop it with your foot is rarely a better option than running in and blocking the shot the way Mascherano did in the first half. Or do you disagree? Because if so, I'd like to point out the result of the two plays and would question you what the difference between them was.
Van der Wiel isn't really a striker. Not sure how he should get to him when he is like 15m away. If anything, Neymar, Xavi or Alba should have pressured him.

It's a shame that gif doesn't show him being completely flat footed and unprepared prior to VdW pulling the trigger. A defender on his toes would have hammered that ball to midfield. It really wasn't such a difficult shot to stop.

lol, an unlucky deflected goal being bad defending, I've officially seen everything now.
That looks poor to me. Perhaps I'm spoiled by Pique and Mascherano though.
I'm not downplaying his overall performance. Yes, he made up for his mistake. But that doesn't mean his mistake didn't happen. Pique did make a mistake at Sevilla but he honestly gets a pass from me due to being the sole reason we don't lose most games by multiple goals for the past several months now.
One last point he wanted to make up for goal and went on gazelle like run up left flank but Neymars failed pass stopped a certain goal.
