What I don't understand is that why in the world our board brought home n kept a player who smokes n even said publicly something like "I smoke whenever I want" while being here! It's unfathomable! Its already proven that smoking can decrease lung capacity n function, which can result in devastating impacts on athletic performance. It's no rocket science, everybody knows that! Sorry, but you are way off. First, we don't know how much he really smokes. And second, smoking clearly didn't affect his athletic abilities as he's still one of our fastest players. I also never got an impression that he doesn't give a shit about playing for this club. Yes, he made mistakes and had some bad games but so do other players (and most of them are paid much better than Mathieu). But I've never got a feeling that he's not trying to do his best. Yes, that's not always enough but he also had good to great games that have been overlooked by his "haters". I get that some people dislike him because of his age (because they want younger players as there is wrong perception that younger players are also better but that's not always true) but I've always respected and like the old man.

Pretty sure smoking doesn't affect ones speed.

It can affect someone speed by affecting his overall health.
But I doubt he is a heavy smoker and he is still relatively young. Probably smokes here and there and that won't affect him

He is still a top class CB, I believe if our board wasn't so garbage we could get at least 15m for him, but that won't happen. If he leaves I think barca fans will regret treating him like this, he never had a problem playing as a 5th choice CB and he gave us some big goals, in a team where he starts every game I think he would still shine for a couple of years.
