Jeremy Mathieu

Hate that players do this, surely a system has to be in place to prohibit smoking. That being said, I doubt he's anything more than an occasional smoker (15 days ago specifically being before his preseason started, he likely won't do it other than during holidays which is the same as Cesc and Pique). Still, should be stopped all together.

Cesc and Pique smoke? Say what?

Dunno about their regularity, maybe just for celebrations or whatever. Still, they're clearly open to it.

Smoking a cigar is a hell of a lot different than smoking cigarettes. The majority of cigar smokers are occasional and situational smokers, whereas cigarettes become an addictive routine. Cigars are also nowhere near as bad for your health.

We also have to take into account the difference between a social smoker and a chain smoker. If Mathieu is just a social smoker then that's really not a big deal.

I agree, cigarettes carry a lot more carcinogens and addictive substances in general. But talking about case specifically, there's no way that Mathieu could be a truly regular smoker (and do so during the season with games/trainings galore) and maintain the level of speed and athleticism he has into his 30's. Cigarettes are addictive enough to pose a risk but if he truly is moderating it to be an occasional act that he only does during the off-season, then it wouldn't be a debilitating concern as of now (though it might well become a problem as he retires from playing and does it with more frequency).

I'm just surprised that they aren't officially forbidden to smoke (or are they?) and that he has no problem even admitting to it publicly.

I can't imagine how a chain smoker would be able to play professional football. My uncle has a vacation house near the beach. He used to smoke a lot (1 packet a day). Optically absolutely in great shape, not overweight in the slightest. When we went swimming on summer vacations together he would have to pause halfway through our usual swimming route to the surface marker about 100 or 150 m (hard to measure distance on water) from the beach whereas I had no problems whatsoever to reach the spot without pausing. Even at a time when I wasn't particularly in shape like I am now. Even my father who is 15 years older than my uncle would leave him in the dust easily. This was basically happening every summer. Last summer however my uncle admitted that he had quit smoking and you could really see the difference. It was huge. You couldn't get him out of the water that summer.

In football with 2 or 3 games per week + intense training the athletes are covering more than 30 km per week. I can't imagine how a chain smoker could possibly pull that off at the top level in modern football.

If he is asked about smoking and denies it then it will look worse for him as there is evidence and rubbish will start about him getting through two packets a day.

It is better that he admitted and was honest.

It was more common two or three decades ago. Today there are probably nearly no players that play on the highest level and smoke regularly.
