Tactics are important, but so is personnel. If tactics are all you need, why even spend 20m on Mathieu? Promote Ie and Bagnack and call it a day. Hell, why not sell Pique and promote that Rodrigo Tarin guy to lower our wage bill while we're at it. After all, all a defense needs is good tactics, right?

Ah, Darth back at it. Nice strawman argument you got there.

Mathieu: "Taking a pay cut? It's true I made a financial effort. But I never had doubts, you're mad about playing at this club." [esport3]

I like this guy. You know what you're going to get, a solid, fast, tall, hardworking, veteran defender. 90% of the CBs suggested by fans and the media seem to be more like unproven wild cards that people are excited to take a gamble on. I'm much more pleased that we went this direction.

We have our own unproven wild cards already. Aside from someone like Thiago Silva, I don't see the usefulness in most of these potential CB signings.

I'll be very excited to see him out there this year :).

if ramos or pepe get injured and varane has a go for two months or so continuous, you will witness them finding it hard to break back into the starting lineup. Remember he benched pepe under mourinho ??

but i am fully convinced since acquiring varane was almost unlikely, and all the hardship in landing primary targets , we made an excellent deal with methew.

Dude, you have a strange Varane fetish. He's a great talent but best CB in the world? Hype, hype and all hype.....

Pepe and Ramos are not very good CBs in my book, not that hard to bench them.

Mats Hummels walked all over Raphael Varane in the World Cup, especially for his goal against France.

Yeah, I don't get Varane hype. Sure he is young, tall, reasonably fast and otherwise talented. But the fact is Bartra played better last season, so so far Barcelona has better young defender IMO. Varane is all potential.

People say that Varane scored in his Clasico debut, but, if I'm not wrong, so did Bartra right? And Montoya nearly did it as well.

To be fair then Varane struggled a lot with injuries as well last season. He is a great talent, just like Bartra. Im not gonna compare them and say who is better or not, but neither of them are among the best CBs in the world yet although once a player gets hyped so much, it's no way back, just strange how many buy into it so quickly.

That is true. Especially the bold portion.

This. He is quite a talented young player, but he lacks consistency. On that part, I don't think learning from Pepe and Ramos would do him too much good :pep:

Bartra is currently more developed, I'd say, but Varane has more potential. Time will tell whether he will reach it.
