I suggest you to hold your horses before making such conclusions base on "one" match. There is a long season ahead and I'll expect much laugh to come if Mathieu start to make blunders.

I suggest you to watch the Liga and stop saying that Pique's or any of our CB is better.
Mathieu outperformed Pique during the last two seasons. If you don't recognize it, it means that you're either a Shakira fan or that you never watch Valencia.

Decent debut, maybe even good, but certainly not as great as some here make it out to be. I can point out several mistakes, several bad passes. For example, he did a stupid foul in a dangerous area, Nice almost scored from that freekick. So let's not get carried away here.

Think the main reason for this is that he doesnt have competition. He has to be under the threat of losing his place if he doesnt focus

Really glad with his debut. I can recall a few mistakes but nothing serious at all. That won header in defense made me literally feel butterflies in my stomach, shows how low my expectations are when it comes to defending set pieces.

terStegen is also far better at claiming crosses than Valdes which makes me more comfortable too.

Some effort that. Everyone in that frame has outjumped Piqué including Genevois who's 4 inch shorter. I don't think Piqué has a clue what he's doing/or meant to be doing.

Oh the wonders of having actual CBs to choose from.

As of now, picking Pique would be coaching malpractice, he's looking as bad as he did at the World Cup, which was really bad. We must hope he will recover before the season starts.

Yeah its true...if you look at him walking around in the training videos and in the game, its visible he's come back from the break carrying a bit extra weight around the midsection.
