Jeremy Mathieu

He's a 5/10 on ball controll. Pique, Bartra, Mascherano are a league above him. In fact, they're better than him at everything except height. Mathieu provides cover for the CB spot and he adds some height. That's about it. He's good enough for most of the games we play, but he'd be my last choice for a game like against Madrid, Atletico, City, Bayern etc.

He wouldnt have played as a winger if he as 5/10 on ball control.

Mathieu is a good player, maybe over paid a bit but he is quick, good in air and good on ball.

Pep wanted him at Bayern.

So? That is no valid argument to tell if any player is good or not... And to be honest, I don't see Mathieu playing important matches with Bayern either...

He's a good enough player as you said, and his aerial abilities are a plus for the team, but in terms of overall quality, we have better players...

I only see Mathieu as a backup at most, hes getting old and Bartra shouldnt be on the bench.
Neither should he be taking a spot on the left wing ahead of Alba.

Alves-Pique-Bartra-Alba is he ideal lineup. Masch has done it well, but hes not a CB, which is very noticable at times.

I think Mathieu should be the one playing against the counterattacking teams, who park the bus. He's better in high line defenses than Pique and Bartra IMO, because of his speed, distribution and the ability to cover both inside and left flank when Alba is away. Pique-Bartra should play against more technical teams who don't rely just on counterattacks, but can create real pressure.

Quick? Depends. Maybe in long distances, because he has long legs, but in a short amount of space his reflexes and burst speed leave a lot to be desired. I already said he's good in the air. I'll give him that but not much else.

I don't know about that. It might be true, considering that Pep also brought Chygrynskiy. I only spoke my mind on Mathieu after I've seen him perform badly against PSG, Madrid, and Sociedad. Luckily, Lucho saw that and left him out of the squad against Atletico. That's one of the few good calls he's made lately.

He's not the worst defender in La Liga, but he ain't top 10 material that's for sure.

Its been noticable hes very very slow when it comes to changing directions. If a player lifts the ball over him, or punts the ball past him, it takes a long time for him to catch up.
It takes a long time to get that big old body moving.
Hes quite good in straight on duels, or when hes already running in the right direction though.
