DonAK
President of FC Barcelona
Maybe. But he should go if the intent was indeed corruption and that happened under his administration.
It is damaging the image of the club and he was directly responsible for that if the allegations are indeed true. Not only that but mes que un club isn't said for no reason. We are a high class sporting institution and it is shameful if actually tried to bribe CTA officials.
If that happens and it is proven he will be gone, and so will many others.
They might have actually tried influencing the referees and outcomes of games, but that doesn't matter as long as it cannot get proven.
In my professional view (Not this specific area but law is my day job) I think Laporta is just trying to buy time and muddy the waters to minimise a potential punishment/delay it.
Despite what is said or argued about in public, the prosecutors have been pursuing this case for a while and probably all significant evidence in the case has already been collated behind the scenes. Keeping that in mind, accusing a club as big of Barcelona of corruption and bribing officials is a big risk and a costly case to pursue because it will be fought tooth and nail in court.
The justice system doesn't make a step like that without having very concrete evidence of wrongdoing. The lack of real explanation by Laporta and pivoting to Tebas/Ceferin/Madrid just makes me feel that he is trying to make it blow over instead of trying to clear the club's name, maybe because he can't.
I don't believe that's the case.
Laporta is a lot of things, but I don't believe he's an idiot. Buying time here makes no sense. What would he buying time for? This is not something that will blow over. It's Spain, and Barca is definitely not the most favoured club in social and political circles in Spain.
You're right about the justice system not taking a big step unless they believe they have concrete evidence that would lead to a positive outcome in a trial, but we're not there yet, and even if we get there that doesn't mean it won't lead to Barcelona not winning the case as they've done a couple of times in separate cases such as the recent Neymar DIS case or the other tax fraud case.
We're still in the initial phase where the presiding judge might decide to throw out the case. Might also end up only being a case of unfair administration or a tax related offence.
