John Stones

As an Englishman, it makes me immensely proud to know that a no-nonsense 21-year old from Barnsley could become the most expensive defender of all time.

I'll say it again; this guy is so incredibly overrated. If he showed performances like the ones he pulls off at an alarmingly frequent rate currently, at Barça, he'd be flayed harder than off-form Piqué and LB Mathieu combined.

Good on the ball, but an absolutely shocking defender.

He's been pretty awful all season. The tactics of Martinez aren't helping but he has definitely gone backwards this season. Perhaps listening to his hype.

Yeah, he's a decent player but as always, the press tend to go overboard with certain youngsters. He reminds but of Gary Cahill a lot, good all round and made for the EPL.

Like any defender he will have lapses but disappointing to see such poor judgement from him at such a crucial juncture in the match - had no reason to lunge relying on the courage of the ref to make the call at Goodison in the dying seconds...Good on the ref for making the right call but jeez, some terrible defending on both ends...Some well taken goals and opportunities in the match but how some keystone cop defending

Now consider the bid Everton turned down for him from Chelsea, it boggles the mind...Of course, another English club (United?) will still pay a pretty penny in the end

How much have you seen him this season? Because these lapses have been happening in just about every match.

Again, good on the ball, but awful at the job that should be his main, namely actually defending.

Much less than the last time Deulofeu was there where I was watching fairly regularly

Well, maybe you should have sold him.

It's looking like we should have but seriously Stones is young and has the ability. He will mature into a top player but he's not at that level yet.

Frankly it's not good for football that teams like Chelsea etc are trying to poach players like Stones at his age. They should just leave them to develop but because the transfer fees go crazy they are now trying to buy them all too early.

So much hyperbole here. He is not an "awful" defender by any stretch of the imagination.

I said "pretty awful all season". I didn't say he was an awful defender. He's just going through an awful run of form and if Jags wasn't injured would have been dropped by now for his own good.

He's also not being helped by Martinez's kamikaze tactics.

For someone widely touted to be the second coming of Christ, then yes, he's awful.
Whenever I see him, he makes mistake upon rookie mistake. Now, I realise that apparently he was more solid last season, but this one - the one where he was supposed to set the world alight at Chelsea, he's been awful.
