Kevin De Bruyne

The injuries are taking its toll on him. Last year he was the best midfielder in the world IMO, even impressed me at the Euro 2020 this summer, but playing through the tournament not fully recovered I think will have a long term effect on his performance. Sad for him, one of the brilliant players of this generation.

Makes me wonder, aside of Messi and Ronaldo which player will be remembered as a true great of this generation?

Lewandowski obviously, but who else? De Bruyne? Neymar? Maybe Neuer if we include gks?

I may take some flack for this, but I have always found him slightly overrated. He is capable of the sublime but he also has quite a few ineffective performances that go without mention.

I agree though!
He is of course great in some sense, but I never wanted him in Barcelona for instance.

I disagree, kdb at his peak was at times the best in the world. Everytime he got the ball I got excited because something was about to happen

I mean I do rate him a lot but it’s that level of praise I personally find hard to reach with him. When his final ball comes off he’s unreal but there’s been plenty of occasions he’s not up to it but no noise is ever made of it.

Maybe the highs are so good that the lows don’t deserve mentioning.

I’ve enjoyed watching him though and quite lucky as I’ve got to watch him live on several occasions.

I can only see Haaland becoming a legend tbh

Hmmm I thought I posted my comment, but I guess I closed the tab before doing so.

My criteria is to rate players based on year of birth, which is kinda unfair, because Lewa is a late great bloomer. Neuer belongs more to Messi's generation, but GKs have different age to judge their greatness.

If YoB is considered, let's say those born during 1990-1995, Neymar shined first, then Hazard came into the picture, then Harry Kane and until recently Kevin De Bruyne was among the best players. There are few others who I'm missing, of course, but that generation all of the forementioned have declined due to various reasons, so their generation won't probably go down in the history as stellar pool of talent. Especially as of current with the rise of the likes of Mbappe, Haaland, Foden, Fati who are touted to be future greats.

Iniesta is this generation. Easily in that tier.

Neuer, easily in that tier.

Lewandowski.

Modric.

Alves.

Marcelo.

Suarez.

Benzema.

Neymar.

Me neither, maybe Neymar got caught in the middle of the transition, as he started to shine around 2010, I think he didn't reach peak level until mid-2010's. To @KingLeo10 list I would include Kaka, Ibrahimovic and Pique of that generation of players as well. Pique in pre-Shakira times, of course, after that we never saw the Piquenbauer in action ever again.

Foden, Fati?

Come one, not talents in the same tier as Mbappe and Haaland

You'll never know. Messi was this injury-prone talent few knew he'll be the next big thing, Ronaldinho doing his trickery at Barca, meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo was demolishing clubs with his dribbles and bomb long shots during 2006-08 period. I can bet I haven't even named the next big player born in the 2000's.
