You are not following the argument. Messi and Ronaldo score similar amounts of goals for the last 6 years or so. But Ronaldo's goals are more concentrated in a fewer amount of games, plus more penaldos. Messi's goals are more spread out through different games. It makes a significant difference in the two players' contribution.

Messi is the better player but Ronaldo has been closer to him in last couple of seasons. The debate is where they are as players now not six years ago.

Comparing over last couple of seasons I doubt there is any great difference in how Ronaldo/Messi goals are spread out.

I agree, with the caveat that Ronaldo is closer to Messi when Messi has injury-ridden seasons. Otherwise there is no comparison other than total amount of goals.

When both fit the gap has been less.

No one will accept injuries as an excuse for Ronaldo nor should it be for Messi.

Really?

Just re-watch Messi's performances against Man City recently and then tell me how Ronaldo (or any Neymar, Suarez, Aguero, Bale, James, Ibra, Robben, Hazard, etc etc etc) can remotely compare?

Hey look, I am not even a big Messi fan, but things are just what they are! Messi is a unique player in the history of the game. In my opinion only Diego Maradona can be put in the same sentence as Messi.

As for CR7, he is an all-time top 10 player in my book.

No player can compare with Messi against Man City. Ever in my opinion. He is best ever for what he has done in his career.

If awards were solely given out and and comparisons made on best individual performances the gap would be huge. But they are not and Ronaldo is not a million miles behind the week in week out Messi this past couple of seasons. It has been very close.

But City is not a big deal in UCL!

I never said that Ronaldo was a million miles away from Messi as an overall player. All I am saying is that as great as Ronaldo is (definitely an all time Top 10 player like I stated before) Messi possess a very particular set of skills which makes him clearly superior to even an all-time great such as Christiano Ronaldo.

As for your "last couple of seasons" argument, then yes, last season, Messi has massive issues with injuries and that allowed Ronaldo to have a better season (his teammates also helped considerably)

During this season, and while goals scored are again similar, Messi is again clearly the best all around player. What I have been saying all along, namely, that Ronaldo can match Messi more or less in goals scored, Messi is clearly ahead in all other departments and we can never discount that fact.

Messi has done it again and again against any opposition, not just Man City. The reason I brought Man City as an example, is because that is a recent game that is fresh in all our minds (at least I hope so)
