They were though, that was when Alves was still leaving and Vidal had some good games against Fiorentina. I used league goals because the players in worse teams who have outscored him like Ruben Castro, Lucas Perez or Borja haven't played in other competitions and you have to remember that Sevilla under Emery is a team that makes deep cup runs above all else. He has had a good season but the main thing is 20 million is a hefty sum for a player that is shorter and smaller than Villa but doesn't carry the individual brilliance to compensate for it. His age is the obvious other concerning factor when so much of the rest of the squad is approaching the wrong side of 30. Do you trust people who can't even secure a decent shirt sponsor to rebuild a stadium to the tune of 600 million while also simultaneously doing the same to the squad when 2018 rolls around? Something will have to be sacrificed and if it comes down to it they will likely freeze spending on the squad in favor of completing the stadium. So we can win next year with Gameiro and Godin type signings but be prepared for some stagnation that cant be addressed for a while after that.
Well, there'll always be people that hype players up, but on the whole people weren't acting like Vidal would save us. There was questions all over the place about if he was actually a RB, if he was gonna be seen as a utility player etc.
And don't get me wrong, I see your point about age and our poor ability to negotiate. But we don't need him to be David Villa - that's a big ask of anyone - he's being signed to up the competitive environment and provide rotations, that wasn't our prerogative with Villa.
I still don't get your point about league goals -- Emery's team are a cup team, sure, and he's performed in those. Those other guys were/are main players for their team where they're solely focused on the league and getting as much as they can out of it. Again, Gameiro wasn't even really first choice at the start of the season, and even now no Sevilla player if Teflon. Oh, and he has the same amount of goals in the league as Baston and Perez, Castro has one more.
We need to sign someone with squad status in mind. These prospects like, say, Sane will cost 30 million and upward, and are more like to get disgruntled by lack of game time, and worse, ruin their development. We need someone who is gonna be a stop gap while guys in the B team and Juvenile A particularly develop over the next 2-3 years.
Gameiro's not the only option, but he's definitely a good one, and we definitely need someone.
