Lionel Messi - v7

Serghei did predict Messi would be finished before 35, which is looking very true. People lose their shit because he uses harsh language but he also called Xavi a finished player by 2015 (who AFAIK is his favorite player) so it's harsh but true.

BBZ was also right about this.

Before I get bombarded, I'm not saying Messi is a bum. He is still world class in technical skill and other aspects but is too much of a headache to build around when he is 33 years old. Not to mention the 100M wage bill. That's all. He wants to move on and we should have moved on.

lack of motivation and him not wanting to be here will be the new excuse tbh. before it was managers, the midfield, the forwards, Suarez, his form etc etc

Messi has sadly declined, the PL would totally expose him

Huh? You can't just decline like that in 1 year. He was dominating in 2019. Messi doesn't give a shit, so.... yes, that will affect his performances.

It isn't an excuse. He clearly doesn't want to be here.

And for the Premier League exposing him? Liverpool just lost 7-2 to Aston Villa.... then Aston Villa lost 3-0 to Leeds. Man Utd lost 6-1 to Spurs... and Spurs just lost a 3-0 lead to West Ham. Leicester City beat Man City 5-2.... then Leicester lost at home to West Ham 3-0 and then Aston Villa. Want me to go on? In other words, Messi would not struggle in that league.

Should?ve finished his chance ... second half almost can?t run ... and i was defending him years ago when he insists of playing easy games days before a big game like this but now he must stay on bench to be physically ready

2018-2019 he gave it 110%. That's why he was dominating. 2018-2019 was a level up from 2017-2018 and an anomaly/last dance kind of year.

I don't get why we can't bench him, at least bench him so he understands what's up

Benching Messi at this point will not do anything. If anything, it'll just make him less motivated.

We should have sold him when he put that transfer request in. We easily would have got a buyer in, and we would have got his big salary off the books.

Man, seriously now, I am a big fan of old Messi. I swear to god I regularly watch youtube highlights with him and Xavi and Iniesta during their golden era. But this current player is a shell of that Messi and nothing anybody says or posts or some stats showing how he scored and assisted a bunch vs likes of Eibar and Granada can convince me otherwise.

I've been on this forum for 7 years. But only in the past 4 years or so I've become critical of Messi. And only in the last 2 years this critique became very harsh. Because he is a player who is getting worse, and yet, somehow his credit has been getting bigger and bigger. It's a paradox. How can a player get much worse, and yet earn more and more and be praised more and more. It's just nonsense. And club and fans are at fault for getting to this situation.

I get his decline. It's normal. And if everyone would also get it, meaning club and fans, and act accordingly, nobody would have any issues about it.

Clubs only wanted him for free.

No one is submitting a bid of 200m plus a 3 year contract for a 33 year old on 1.2m a year.

Plus his agent and signing on fee.

Stop living in fantasy.

It's like I keep saying. Claiming this current version of Messi is an amazing player is actually an ironic disservice to the years in which he actually was an amazing player.

Messi has declined, even the most die hard fans have to accept that. I don't think his form is just because he wanted to leave.Time catches up with everyone. He had over 10 years at the top which is exceptional.

Yes, average players can decline that badly. But not players like Messi. He's clearly not performing because he doesn't give a shit. I guarantee you if he goes to a team where they're competing and they actually have a manager who knows what he's doing.... and they have a board that matches his ambition, Messi will put in great performances. He's looking like a guy out there who just doesn't give a shit. That does affect your performances heavily.

He is not good enough to play heroball like he tried in the second half, trying those cute one-twos from deep and losing the ball every time. Infuriating stuff. Really wish he left this summer, ffs Barto. Predictably stopped defending in the second half after becoming gassed in the first as well.

Ok. So let's act as a club according to this reality. Sub him more, rotate him, cut his salary less than half. And if he doesn't accept, move him on. Nothing will change what he did for this club if you reassess the position of the club regarding Messi to match the reality of 2020.

How is this anything else than reasonable?
