Messi's been spoiled by 2 things:
1) Extraterrestrial talent on the ball which means when he was in his prime, he didn't have to compensate much using guile/tactics/strategy/extra effort.
2) Too much success too soon. By the age of 25, this guy had 4 Ballon D'Or, a 91 goal season, multiple LLs, 3 CL (or 2.5).
This is why he's still harboring delusions that he doesn't need to adapt.
It's not those things that trigger his bad side to this degree. It's a lack of human character to deal with them and control them. He wasn't that hindered by those personality traits (which, let's face it, are kind of meh on multiple terms - leadership, work ethic, moral fiber etc.), because he was in his physical prime and he had outrageous talent. But they showed through as he aged and lost the spark.
But I blame the club and his fans more than him. They adulated him too much, when he should have been given better guidance.
