Lionel Messi - v7

Messi is used to players knowing him and cutting the ball back to him.
Braitwaithe did what those Argentina strikers always do, shoot with the blinders on.

It's not even about cutting it back to messi it's about making the right decision. He should have stopped and waited to see who was in a better position be it messi or someone coming from midfield. Yes it was 3 nil but he had no chance of scoring and it's good to show the manager you can make a good decision

Mentality is an issue. He was great yesterday, but he seems to play well when the team plays well. When the chips are down he's not there.

That's the problem with club and country for him though. If he was in a good team it would all click into place a lot more. It's expecting 33 year old Messi to lead a mediocre team.

Isnt that the same with every player ever. If their whole team are playing bad a player wont have any real impact. Messi probably has more of an impact than most with a bad team due to his ability to do things out of nothing.

I agree. Whenever things are bad, he just gives up. Imo, he never really carried the team alone. He had a lot of help in each of the great seasons. Which is fine, it's how modern football works, no matter how much some fans wanna pretend otherwise. If the team is strong you win, if it's not strong, you lose. A single-player can't make much of a difference at the biggest stage.

Goes for Ronaldo as well. If you listen to some of the fans, you'd think Ronaldo and Messi played for Getafe and Levante . When in fact, they played only in creme de la creme of world football.

Or the team is good when Messi is good? When did barca ever play great with him being terrible?

Nowadays its more that we are good vs average and bad sides when Messi is good and bad otherwise.
Vs strong teams we suffer due to quality difference but can ocassionally perform better than expected if Messi does well.

Barca can never play great with Messi being terrible because Messi is too much involved with the way we play. It's a symbiosis of some sort. When the team is clicking well, Messi makes a difference and is usually the best player (Pep era, MSN era, pre-implosion EV). When the team is not performing well collectively, Messi is not the one to rally the troops and turn it up from an underdog position.

Most goals scored in 2020

Messi 26 (19 in la liga)
Benzema 23 (17 in la liga)
Moreno 22 (18 in la liga)
Suarez 17 (15 in la liga)
Aspas 15 all in la liga

Even though it is his worst year since 2008 (20 goals) Messi is still the best goals scorer in spanish football.

True. Not to mention that the others are strikers.

+1

I don't know really how difficult is for many to get that. Shows lack of understanding to pose questions like that.

The only real alternative that can make that question meaningful is to ask When did barca play great without him on the pitch.
That's a real question. And I wanna see more games to say, to make a meaningful comparison. We have seen only 2.5 this season without him and all were great.
