Barca can never play great with Messi being terrible because Messi is too much involved with the way we play. It's a symbiosis of some sort. When the team is clicking well, Messi makes a difference and is usually the best player (Pep era, MSN era, pre-implosion EV). When the team is not performing well collectively, Messi is not the one to rally the troops and turn it up from an underdog position.

Back in the day when we had better players it was. Think milan and psg games in 2013.
Quality difference is too mich nowadays though. allthough I get the sentiment. I feel Iniesta always was a player that stepped his game up when we needed it in big games.

Back then the Barca team was built on Xavi and Iniesta with Messi the icing on top. They were the engine of that team and the ones that dictated the tempo and tactics of Barca team more so than anyone else.

Now with the team everything goes through Messi.

The FIFA awards make more sense as well and Ronaldo better than Messi or just pick and choose which ones to agree with?

That is the vote of players, coaches and journalists and Ronaldo been ahead of Messi four of the past five years.

The only positive is that he?s getting the chances and should have way more goals. Unlike in 13/14 he wasn?t getting many chances at all.

He's getting many chances because of his free role, which allows him to be around the ball constantly no matter where the ball is. Even if it's on the left, he can just abandon his spot and join the attack on the left, which is a luxury no other player in the world gets a sniff at. I don't have a problem with that if Messi is still effective. But in this year, he was far from what I'd call effective, considering his role in the team.

incredible, in this forum every time you say something positive about Messi will always come out a user who will have something to say against.
Yet we are (we should) be among the fans of barcelona..

I think the Guardian journalists are competent and that Ronaldo has not been better than Messi the last 4 out of 5 years (I watch Juve every single day of the league)
