Most people are stupid. What a majority of people may consider true doesn't make it so, especially if they don't watch him every week and as you remarked people may very well have inherent biases in their views (due to his historical performance levels).
So in essence it's not supriring that people still rate him higher than his current performance levels warrant.

Messi has scored some wonderful headers in his time. The CL final goal, others that are quite difficult to score. Because of obviously reasons (his height) and Barcas all around playing style, he doesnt score many, but he sure as hell can head the ball.

Salah, Mane, Van Dijk, Alisson, Robertson

Sorry, I just counted 11 players from only 2 teams that performed better in their respective positions than Messi in 2020.
You can assume how much the list will grow if I look at other teams as well.

Prime Maradona didn't produce the same number of G+A like Messi last season.
Any player produce similiar G+A number will consider as lifetime their season (Henry 2002/2003 for example)...
