Lionel Messi - v7

For 550 million over 4 years, I would have a "lot of love" for the club too.

Farce of a contract. And a farce of a player.

The board being idiots is nothing new. But I doubt they were willing to gift him that 138 M a year if Messi asked for 50 M a year.
To put some context into this, Tom Brady (the greatest player in NFL history) has repeatedly taken less money than the top QBs for the last 15 years running...to enable his team to get better talent around him. And this is why he's going for his 7th ring. Takes an enormous amount of leadership and ego swallowing...in service of winning championships.

Messi turned into a money hungry clown somewhere around 2015, forgetting that he only won those CLs because he had Xavi, Iniesta, Alves and co. No player can win the CL by himself (Not Messi, not CR7, not Maradona, not Pele) but the strategy of thinking he could put such huge financial burden on the team while also saying "board didn't build right around me" shows just how detached from reality he has been. Inflated sense of his own abilities. He's GOAT tier (at his best) but not invincible. Deserves the string of CL humiliations attached to his resume.

Time to remove this Messi hater from the Let's Hope list

I highly doubt Messi had any say in his salary so far. He probably has highly paid lawyers along with his father who're there to get the best contract possible for him.
I feel it's wrong to blame Leo for being money hungry. He gives his negotiatiors leverage by performing on the pitch and bringing in revenue and that's why they're able to negotiate that type of salary for him.

It's a sensitive matter. It's easy for us to say that he should play for free since he's already rich, but it'd be an enormous thing to ask of him since he'd be losing an extreme amount of money he could've earned here or elsewhere.

In the end of the day he is yet another mercenary. End of story.

Lets hope our captain lead us to the sf of copa del rey with a brace. Long are the days since we spanked someone comfortably, lets hope for 3+ goalfest tonight

You have cheap mercenaries that cant get the job done. Messi is more like John Wick nowdays, it seems everybody is after him, everybody want to taste his defeat. And more it gets personal, the better. Captain would have his say

Nope, your revenue didn't decline while your wage bill did (I believe).

Perhaps so, certainly was noticable on the field though.

Mistake to let him go, in hindsight, just like it will be a mistake to let Ramos go.

Yes, you cant just pay the players everything they ask for, but some players cant really be replaced either.

He has probably made that much money for the club over the years. They wouldn't have that type of money without him, let alone what he has done on the pitch. The problem is what huge salaries they have given to average players over the years.

Of course he shouldnt play for free and it doesnt make him a 'mercenary'.

Folk are reacting badly as they probably believed he was at Barca purely for love of club. Messi is like any other player and will fight for his own position. Has done it countless times at Barca and threatened to leave and used his position.

Used his power when Ibra there to threaten to leave, under Lucho threatened to leave and played game in following Chelsea etc, threatened to leave until club paid his tax case, tried to leave last summer when Suarez sold etc.

Messi is not some humble quiet man at Barca purely for love of club. He is a powerful player who has used that to manipulate situations to his advantage time and again. Any of us would do the same really.

He has always had the club by the balls really and been the one in position of power up until last summer.

At the end of the day he's a footballer, not a player who plays for charity. Who are we (or anyone) to ask that he plays for free? He doesn't owe the club that.

No, but then again, now he is just another player here. The fanatic fans at least need to realise, he doesnt care that much about Barca anymore. He does his job exceptionally well, but its just a job for him in his late days. He was different at some point in his career. He did care greatly about the club im sure, but now he is just squeezing every penny.

Didnt he threaten the club because the fans criticized him, not because he wanted more money. Im pretty sure he could have asked for more in his peak days. All those other threats we dont know about, those are just rumours.

Where could he have gone in his peak that would have paid him more and at another top club?

Real wouldnt happen and after that not many that tick those boxes.
