It is normal a Liverpool players wins it. They were the best in 2019. It is a team sport. The highest achievement for a player is to lead their team to the greatest heights. Dan Dijk did that in 2019, Messi did not. This doesn't mean Van Dijk is a better player than Messi.

Bit different to previous years. The odds aren’t that conclusive + Messi has been putting in GOAT performances recently and he won FIFA The Best. If any serious rumours or leaks come out in the next few weeks about Messi potentially winning it watch the odds shift.

I don't know if you have something against messi, which is weird if you are a barca fan. I do think it was quite clear messi was the best player individually last year. If it is an individual award, I don't see why the barca team's shortcomings make van dijk more deserving.

Using that logic, Ronaldinho shouldn't have won in 2005 and Brazilian Ronaldo shouldn't have won in 1997 even though they were clearly the best player individually

Just so you know, it was not Messi that was defending when the team conceded 4 goals - nor did he completely go AWOL; he provided 2 goal scoring opportunities which the glorious attack of our team screwed up royally! This is after he scored a brace in the first leg, before which he single handedly brought us past Man Utd!!

It's not even like Liverpool's defense was the best last CL for their defender to be considered their best player, let alone considering him the best player amongst all the footballers!

I strongly doubt VVD was even Liverpool best player last season, at least in CL. Manè destroyed Bayern and Porto and he still playing amazing this first part of the season, the comeback with Barca was team effort combined to idiot disasterclass and VVD was responsible for at least 2 goals at Camp Nou, Allison saved their ass at Anfield and in the final, and Allison remember saved Liverpool against Napoli in the last match with that huge save but no one talk about him, and dude won also copa america.

Just for the record, I'm not one of delusional fanboys who think Messi should win every year ballon d'or because he's the best player in the world, of course you can't pretend to win it if you play like a ghost on the biggest stage and being eliminated before the SF but this is definitely not the case of last season, Messi was by country mile the best player of CL, he got MOTM for fun, he scored astonishing goals, he likely pulled 3 of 5 best individual performance in ko stages and he's definitely not the reason why we lost 4-0 at anfield. From a results point of view. Individually Van Dijk has kept 2 clean sheets in 12 games in the PL, they look weaker defensively than last season and in general, just scraping wins and late goals this season.

Messi's performance at Anfield wasn't gutless, he was the only barça player on a respectfull level, over 2 games, he was for shure better then Van Dijck
