Lionel Messi - v7

Griezmann should be shipped out this summer. He is probably the worst mistake this club ever did. Thereby, his contract can't be a reference point for the future. I am almost sure that 99% of forum members agree that Griezmann and Coutinho should be sold. If we manage to do that Messi will remain the highest pain player even with 20 mil net.

mate, don't get me wrong, i would give him 1M a year. football players salaries are way out of line.

but things don't work like that and messi is in a position to negotiate. and since he's keeping us afloat and does the playmaking + scoring and is the most marketable/watchable player we have, he will get over 20M easily.

He probably will, but if we bend over for another 50 mil contract we won't be able to rebuild. As a result, in 2 years time we'll be in even worse state than today. If we somehow manage to offload dead weight in the likes of Coutinho, Griezmann, Umtiti and Pjanic maybe we can offer him 30 mil. The truth is that another astronomical contract is not just absurd but probably impossible with the current state of our finances.

In the end our problem is not Messi himself but other high paid individuals who are a heavy burden on this club finances and don't contribute at all. If we take into a consideration the salaries of above mentioned quartet a ludicrous amount of money is flushed down the drain every season. Add oldies like Busquets and Pique to that and it becomes even more absurd.

I think the point is: how much income does Messi generate for Barcelona ?

A lot. You know how many people view barca matches, visit barcelona and go to the stadium just to see Messi play.
If he joins another club those people and alot of sponsors switch as well.
Messi is a big part of Barca's status and appeal at this point.

Its like Jordan and the Bulls back in the 90's.

That's correct but if we continue to lose 8-2, 4-0 or 4-1 in CL, less and less people will come to the stadium and he will generate less than before. The problem is that every career comes to an end and we should look forward. Even if he extends we will have only two seasons to prepare the entire club for the future. Therefore, if we concentrate solely on 34y old Messi and nothing else we will fail miserably.

If he's really on 150m a year, everything around 50m will be a huge success for the club.

He is/was on 138ME gross (~60ME net)? Griezmann is on 23ME net? Looking at our established wage structure 30ME net is the least amount I would expect, which would basically mean halving his salary. I guess that would be a win for both sides.

Milchm?dchenrechnung though.

I doubt Messi will get a huge reduction in salary.

If he is to stay could see them putting together some kind of deal that ties him to club after retirement and long term contract.

Pure fantasy numbers but rather than 300m for a three year contract that is given as ten year contract at 30m a year adjusted for inflation. With some allowances for him to go on loan and play elsewhere at some point so not all playing days tied to Barca.

That would be the worst thing in the world. When Messi stops playing, the costs related to Messi need to either reduce by 95% or better yet disappear completely from our books.

The only way you could justify paying huge money to Messi post-retirement is if he becomes some sort of genius manager like Pep.

This club is not some sort of charity foundation.

Not really if think he is worth the 100m a season now but club cant afford to pay it.. or can but need to use the cash elsewhere at this moment.

Depends also on how much it is worth for club to have Messi tied to them after he stops playing.

All depends on how much they value him and then working out ways to pay it.

If he thinks he's still worth 100m a season then he can try to get that money elsewhere.

Agree but just saying how board could approach it if they think he is worth it and need to find 'creative' ways to make it happen.

Cant see the figures being as 'low' as being suggested on here and board say take it or leave it.

Yes, but we were talking about his salary. 50M is too much ? if he generates a income for the club for 100M, it's fair....If a player has a salary of 20M but he generates 30M.... Messi is much cheaper.

In term of future of the club and looking forward, yes, I agree with you.
Btw I do not think that Barto didn't allow Messi to leave the Club for sporting reasons, but rather for economic reasons.

There are probably estimates, but how precise can they come to the chunk of the revenue Messi generates?

Real did well revenue-wise after Ronaldo left. They might be the bigger brand, but is it possible the club's that dependent on Messi? Some mention a third of the revenue. Seems insane to me.
