Lionel Messi - v7

Another way to look at this is IF he leaves this summer the club will have to pay him his loyalty bonus which according to reports is something like 30m (don't know if gross or net but I assume it's net). So unless he'd accept that bonus being paid off in installments over the next few years (which I think he might be more willing to do now that Laporta is back) he would cost the club those 30 and something millions next season (don't know what's written in his contract but it's possible that bonus would need to be paid off even before July 1 so this fiscal year which would be even worse for the club; if we can push that payment to 2021/22 season at least we could improve our revenues a bit next season with fans possibly allowed back to stadiums etc.) even not playing for us. That would be my starting negotiation point for his salary next year if he stays.

Sign him on lower wages without giving him more sign-on-fees etc. and promise to pay him those "old" bonuses negotiated in 2017 for when he leaves/retires in 2023/24. By that time club's financial situation will hopefully improve enough.

I'd also offer him lower fixed wages with higher variables for individual and mainly team performances/success because that's what brings money back to the club. Barca doesn't earn much if Messi scores 50 goals and we don't win a single trophy. So if we for example qualify for the CL semi-finals in next two seasons we'd get a lot of UEFA money and I wouldn't have any problems some of that money getting back to Messis' pocket if he'd help us get there.

Media starting to report that Aguero has been offered contract as Laporta wants Messi to stay.

Backwards step to what club had started to move away from.

If this happens and Aguero is a starter Laporta and his team have no sporting plan and are just winging it under fear of losing Messi ahead of anything else.

While have got lucky with the young players coming through at right time.

Would be quite funny coming from Messi blaming Bartomeu having no sporting project because he has pushed his underperforming amigo(s) out of the club to see him praise Laporta for bringing another of his amigos.

Would not be surprising in the least. Messi doesn't come across as either fair or logical in his decisions. I personally wouldn't trust him at anything outside the football field. As a footballer, he is amongst the finest ever, but outside of that?... don't see much quality worthy to be admired or revered honestly.

If Laporta panders to that side of Messi, I think he's starting this monumental task or rebuilding the club on the wrong foot.

There are probably estimates, but how precise can they come to the chunk of the revenue Messi generates?

Real did well revenue-wise after Ronaldo left. They might be the bigger brand, but is it possible the club's that dependent on Messi? Some mention a third of the revenue. Seems insane to me.

Real and Barca have similar brand power imo since the last 30 years or so, despite Madrid being more successful in the CL. Much of that is tied to the 50s anyway and those early editions.

Yeah, I agree. And I always though Ronaldo had the bigger brand than Messi. Don't know where such difference would come from.

Have to say that if we bring in Aguero, all those saying Messi got pissed off about the board because they axed his main South American amigos from the team will be proven right. No two ways about it. Bringing in Messi's friends and recreating Amigos 2.0 clan is not a plan for Barcelona at this point at all. It's the same shit Barto did all these years that got us where we are now. It completely goes against the principles Laporta is supposed to reinstate.

individually yes. but ronaldo wasn't a product of real. just another mercenary who didn't give a fuck about the club.

messi is more tied in to barcelona as a club and is undoubtedly its best player ever. ronaldo on the other hand is not.

Cr7 has better pr. Little kids wanting to be him, chicks dig him more and weirdly has a huge muslim following.
Thats probably dye to pr as well and bs claims about Mesi like he is some zionist while Ronaldo doesnt get tattoos to donate blood to poor suffering Palestine kids. Things like that.

Messi is more popular with the average football fan because they see the quality. In a way how average tennis fans prefer Federer over Nadal I guess.

Always hated the Madrid is the biggest club bullshit though. Its build on a corrupt legacy from the 50's and nowadays a marketing plot.

To me there is no biggest club. Its Barca, Madrid, Bayern, Liverpool, United, both Milan clubs, Juve and Ajax whepn it comes to legacy. But the nouveau riche appeal to plenty as well. Nothing a level above though.
