It was before COVID. I doubt Messi has brought in anywhere close to the amount of money in the past 18 months. We've lost a lot from no stadium tours, shirt sales, no tours around the city, no matchday tickets.
With COVID cases supposedly rising all over Europe, I don't see our situation improving all that much in that department.
Of course, it is a worldwide crisis. He certainly generates less revenue, but not 0 revenue.
The question is that you cannot say whether it is too expensive or not if you do not know how much income he generates for the club.
Surely they want to keep him not for sporting reasons, but mainly for financial reasons.
