Messi probably ended up on top on their lists by accident, just because they got one player right doesnt mean they are worth listening to.
Sure, they have some interesting stuff, but at the end of the day whoscored is not reality.

That was la remontada season, and it was obvious in that season that leo was passing the torch to neysnake, only for him to fuck it up later, but we were the thing to behold because msn was fearsome as fuck and neymar was uprising to even overshadow messi.
Whoscored is data based on performance week in week out, not if someone is 'clutch' in cl games.
Im from croatia, and i've been at 11 games so far of barca, 8 of them at nou camp and i regularly payed for ticket, cheapest one was 40 euros, all other were from 60 to 160 euros.
Lets say, i wouldnt be really happy if our star players dont give a fuck when playing against some middle table team, because cl is another week.
All im trying to say, that fans come from all over the globe to watch their favourite club play, and messi is the brightest star of them all because he almost always delivers, no matter the opponent.
I think thats why barca has lunatics like me, we always had some pure talent in our ranks that you never know what they would pull out of their assholes against anyone.
Every game matters, and Messi is in that department head and shoulders above everybody else, more then a decade

The rating is based on a number of things. Number of successful dribbles, key passes, assists and goals are taken into account. Ronaldo has never won it as he has been mainly a goalscorer for a long time now. The more well rounded player will achieve the higher rating.

I don't think it's an accident when the same player has came top in 9 out of 11 seasons. He always has near enough the highest successful dribbles, assists and goals every year.

I watched every single game in 16/17 and there's no way Neymar was better than Messi.In fact,16/17 was one of Leo's best seasons ever,he was a BEAST,scoring impossible goals every week.Furthermore,he was still an elite dribbler.
On the other hand,Neymar was worse than 14/15 and 15/16.His finishing was pretty mediocre.
I think WhoScored is not an accurate metric of a player's season-long performances.All games are not equal. By WhoScored standards,CR7 was nowhere close to being the best player in the world the past few years,despite being the best at what he did(scoring tons of goals in the CL).
And although I love Messi and I think he was great in 15/16,17/18 and especially in 16/17,I cannot confidently say he was the runaway best player in the world,because he did not perform that well in the CL(and the WC). And let's not pretend that the CL is not by far the most important competition.
