Lionel Messi - v7

so he never ran 10, but you think because he ran 8-9 in one game he would have won much more?

He has run about 7-8 km per game since Pep came. It used to be enough because the team was much better and teams defended in a different fashion. Yet football changes, it has evolved since that. Ever since we were steamrolled by the 12/13 Bayern pressing, teams have figured out a way to counter our positional build up.

His 6-7 kilometers right now are a liability because he does not do nearly enough to press or simply cut out the passing lanes. The opponents progress the ball into our half like it is nothing because we have not one but two guys who do not bother to press or close down the passing lanes in our first line of defense. It is clear that Suarez has to be dropped out of the two. Moreover, Messi has also declined. His precision in dribbling, passing and shooting is not as acute; hence his defensive idleness costs us more nowadays.

For those who say oh because he sprints.. Let me just tell you this.. Rubben in the world cup was 35, doing crazy sprints left and right, yet scoring more than10 km. Same for Neymar who busts far more sprints.. So it's not that at all.

Keep in mind we are talking about a Neymar thats not even in shape. Its just pathetic.

Yup. I don't have numbers but my guess is 11-12 km for 2015 for him. A killer on the wings.

I rip on the dude for the pain he caused Barcelona (setting off the worst timeline). If he was serious and motivated, we could have moved on from Messi sooner. I remember talking to Konan in 2015 after the 4-0 v RM that I thought Neymar could take the mantle and we were better placed making him the focal point.

Then the darkest timeline happened.

so he should start running 10km per game when he never done it his whole career? did it dawned on us suddenly that messi doesn't run that much?

No, but we're going to start pointing out his shortcomings when he can no longer provide the high level of production (small and big games) that he could in his prime despite shortcomings.

I'm a Messi fan but I'm a Barcelona fan before that. It's hurting both parties at this point and we should start a total rebuild.

It's common sense that his distance covered would come down. There are a number of factors that come into this. Messi has been playing elite level football for around 15 years now.

The amount of wear and tear that will happen over that time is self explanatory. There are players who are finished around 27/28. Another one is, coaches have told Messi to conserve his energy so he can use it for dribbling and beating players. I don't know how many people have played football at a decent level, but going on a dribbling run is one of the most tiring things you can do in a football match.

He's 33 now, and on his last legs. Bar CR7 no one has played at such a high level for so long. CR7 also stopped dribbling after his first couple of years at real and used all his energy for goalscoring only, while messi has had to be the main dribbler, playmaker and goalscorer of the team.

[Onda Cero - @Alfremartinezz] | Messi has told the club that he wants to leave this summer, but Barcelona has denied it.

It's over dawg.

i understand the which hunt. just don't see it a huge problem that can't be fixed with good runners around him, for the 2-3 seasons he would still be here.

level of production has declined, but he is still the best player we have and best player in la liga.

Wouldn't mind messi leaving.. Would be a sad day.. But also I'm sure I will not miss a single game wherever he plays to enjoy him still.. Any kind of fundamental change is impossible while messi is here. For many reasons. Still I don't think he will leave.
