Lionel Messi - v7

I'm of the opinion that both Messi and CR7 benefited a lot from all time great teammates. In reality, they're not that much better than legends of the past like R9, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Di Stefano, Romario or Maradona. They were just much more professional/driven for a longer span (15 years) than those other.

The longevity is key, especially CR7. Look at Ronaldinho's level from 03-06. He was incredible. Ronaldo in the mid to late 90s (and a great comeback around 2002-2004). They couldn't sustain it for 10-15 years. Ronaldo's one season at Barcelona is up there with a lot of Messi's but it was only one season.

The other thing as you say is the great players they played with. In the past the talent was more spread out, whereas now all the best players play in the top teams and the domestic leagues are weaker than ever and the top teams win all the time. Penaldo is in the team that have won 9 league titles in a row. Serie A when Ronaldo was in it in the late 90s was near enough the toughest competition in the world to win.
That's partly why Messi and CR7 (despite the 2016 fluke) have never really hit the heights on the international stage. Not at the tournaments.

Interesting fact about Messi. When we won the Champions League in 2006 he didn?t celebrate with his team because Rijkaard took a decision that was best for the team and not play the not fully recovered yet Messi in the final.

Messi didn?t have much power back then and now he has all the power there is. You can imagine the type of unprofessional selfish crap he pulls in our locker room. Just kick him out for god sake.

Why should the club need to pitch the new project to Messi? I know he is the face of the club and captain but at this late stage of his career, a big part of the new project should include what happens after he leaves. Which in reality could be a a season from now.

I wouldn't let Messi overplay his hand. The old guard need to be moved on (did years ago) and if he doesn't like it he knows where the door is while Barca can still get a good fee rather than nothing next year and the saved wages can go towards a younger player.

I don't think Messi wants to leave but he gets emotional after big defeats. How many times has he retired from Argentina? Where's he really going to go now to uproot his family in the middle of a pandemic? Call his bluff.

I cannot imagine what sort of tantrum and toxicity he has created in the past two years because we did not sign Neymar back. He even admitted that he demanded the board to sign him. Messi as the case with many latinos unfortunately due to nurture probably have huge attitude issues. Riquelme and Rivaldo were divas who disobeyed their managers.

I remember Pep saying how worried he was because Messi wouldn't speak to him all week in training because he subbed him in a game. He never dared to take him off again. Subsequent managers would only ever take him off if he asked to due to an injury.

Coaches have always had to indulge him. Lucho for example had to change his whole managerial style but he was rewarded with a treble because that's what Messi is capable of on the pitch.

I don't think it's all ego with Messi. He's clearly not neurotypical.

I think Messi has matured since then. If you explain to him that he need some rest time to time so he can compete in the CL then I think he'll understand.

Why was Coutinho shipped away immediately? Who does that? Well, he probably reminded Messi and Neymar and they shipped him away to calm Messi tantrums. Probably the case.

Maybe, but it shows he's always been difficult to manage. Coaches have accepted it because he's been practically a cheat code on the pitch over the years when he's in the mood.
