Lionel Messi - v7

Ronaldo won that many CLs thank to his really good team and his goal-scoring abilities in clutch moments and key matches, which elevated that team to a new level. Same as Messi at Barca. Great team, but he elevated it.

That's how you win titles in football. You need a great team.

And about the bolded part, that's your preference. Ronaldo can do things Messi can't as well. Dribbling is also why I see Messi as the better player, but it's a personal taste, not a rock solid argument.

It is. It's fine to be good at something and average at others, Cr7 is only good at finishing, he can't dribble, pass or create to save his life. Good at just one thing, whereas Messi is great in all aspects that matter. I don't know how to put it better, you just can't be better than Messi if you're a good finisher but can't create or dribble, no personal taste in that.

Champions League is the biggest competition and defines the most important part of the season. Ideally you need both, overall consistency over the league, and peak level in the biggest matches. But you can't say being consistent vs weaker sides over the season beats being decisive in the key games vs other European giants.

You need both, and both are key parts of a great season.

2015/2016 ronaldo faced: Roma, Wolfsburg, a 4th placed man city and Atletico in the final where they won on penalties. Messi outperforms him and wins la liga, copa, club world cup, european super cup but because eder scored a goal in the euros final ronaldo wins it. He definitely didn't beat any elite opposition to get those trophies. He won by more than double the points. That's the sort of thing I mean.

You mean when Ronaldo was ripping Atletico apart scoring a hattrick in the CL semifinal, Messi was better? No. I'd give 2017 clearly to Ronaldo. 2018 is close, but I'd give it to Ronaldo still, because of the Champions League, and Messi having an absolute stinker vs Roma.

I'd have it something like this.

Ronaldo: 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018.

Messi: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019.

Peak for peak, and early to mid career, Messi. Late career, Ronaldo.

2013, 2020, I think neither was better. Messi was injured that season in the most important part, and Ronaldo didn't do great either.

In 2017 & 2018 Ronald's form in the league was atrocious until the later parts of the campaign from memory, that's why putting so much emphasis on them winning the champions league, a short team based knockout completion in which they got incredibly lucky at times as a measurement of how good a player is absurd.
If those calls went against them they'd be out and they wouldn't have those 3 champions leagues going by your logic your outlook would then change to he was crap because his team didn't win a completion that can be decided by pure chance?

Messi's anger with the club is getting worse. Leo felt very bad that the content of his meeting with Koeman was leaked. He believes that it's a strategy of the current board to try to expose him to the fans. [clarin via @tjuanmarti] https://t.co/sDG8zFaUww

He has no intention of leaving, this is just politics and power play.

I don't like Barto but its time for him to call Messi's bluff; stay and accept the changes or gtfo.

Exactly, he's just trying to scare off Bartomeu into accepting his demands. Same shit, different flavor. Koeman needs to hold his own and don't bulge.

Back to square one I see then. Maybe Messi is trying to get rid of Barto? Like when he spoke out about abidal/the board. Nope? Any takers? Or just mEsSI bAD

It's so important Barto ships out Suarez and Alba.. if he ends up trying to keep club de amigos happy AND Koeman, shit is gonna hit the fan big time. probably within 1 month we'll have stories 'leaked' "Barca players are unhappy and doubt Koeman's training methods" aka he asked them to run abit more and cut short their holidays

If it was up to me, i'd get rid of Messi also. I'll always be thankful for what he gave us.. the magic, the titles and he'll always be GOAT to me but hes gonna end up destroying his legacy here and risks fans turning on him. I'm sure the fanboys will say its all some conspiracy and Barto is paying everyone to turn people against him but I'm a huge Messi fan myself and even i can't defend the last few years

What fucking demands? Who knows what his demands are or if he even has demands?

Some tweets or media bs is not a source, but for some muppets on this board they are like the bible.

No doubt. Amigos are irredeemable at this point. You just can't build a new team with delusional past it players who can't run, but think they are still hot shots. You simply can't.

Messi needs to stop being played 90 minutes of every match, for his own good. That would also enable us to start moving on.

The worst Messi will do is sulk for a year while refusing to sign a contract. That's the only hand he has, the fact he can leave next year on his own terms.

He's got no intention of leaving this summer and uprooting his family in the current climate.

Possibly if his bluff is called he will leave now but more likely next summer. If he does stay next season I just hope he performs.

Ronaldo did nothing in that 2018 CL final (or semi final). Messi did have a stinker against Roma but he was the better player that year and won Barca the league.

I don't think either were great in 2014 but at least Messi helped Argentina to the World Cup final and scored what should have been the title winning goal against Atleti but was robbed. I wouldn't chose either over the other though in 2013 or 2014.

Ronaldo: 2008, 2016, 2017

Messi: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2018, 2019

I've given 2016 to Ronaldo but the sheer luck he had in CL/Euros was insane.
