Longevity is a double edged sword IMO.

Back in the days of the old legends (Cruyff, DiStefano, Maradona, Beckenbauer etc etc.), players had a meteoric rise, a dominant stretch of 5-8 years and a very steep decline. So, when they were playing, we got to see them at their absolute, athletic prime for a LARGER portion of their career.

This has sort of distorted our view of just how good Messi (or CR7, you can make the argument for him too) was at his best, because he's been so productive and statistically dominant even past his athletic prime (08-15). Whenever I go back and watch his videos from 2009, 2011 or 2015, I'm blown away by just how dominant he was. Easily 10 times the level of current Messi, and actually prolly even better

A lot of the lads who come in here and hate on him when he doesn't score in a given game in almost 2022 miss this point.

how many saw those 5-8 years of DiStefano, Cruyff or even Maradona? if you gather all the minutes the members of this forum watched those players you wouldn't reach a week of footage/live games.

most of us where too young or not even born yet to witness those players. and the available footage is hard to come by, not good quality etc.

these days you can have a player camera watching a certain player for the whole game. not to mention sites, blogs, tv shows doing analysis prior/after the game.

people are ignorant and get bored quickly when everything is at their disposal.
