Messi did same at Barca when things not going his way in latter years. It would be head down and little reaction at times.

Just dont think he can handle not playing all that well and not impacting games as so used to it but he definitely cares and is trying with PSG. To point he looks frustrated with himself more than disconnected.

PSG can win it all when have Mbappe but would most likely need to ride their luck a bit against the better teams.

Real are not one of the better teams and are facing their third last 16 knockout in four seasons.... that is all about to change for them from next season though.

With or without Mbappe, Messi or Neymar I don't think this PSG stands a chance against Bayern, City, Lpool or even Chelsea.

for sure. psg doesnt quite look a 'team' yet--they rely on mbappe for goals.

look at city: 2-3 players are always scoring their goals. its a system-team

teams are always better when goals are distributed among 4-5 players

in league type competitions, absolutely. in duble legged KOs you want guaranteed efficiency.

all those wide midfielders pep uses as wingers and strikers shit the bed when the chips are down. for that you need a proper killer at striker.

right--i see your point. system-teams are better suited for long-term competitions such as leagues, i think thats right. hence Peps unbelievable league record as a manager.

i still think theres something to be said about having multiple potential goal scorers, though. even the best players will have off days--messi had too many in CL KOs in the last 4-5 years, in my view--so having a 'back up' cant hurt. for example, yesterday: city won 5-0 with what, 3 different goal scorers? ill take that any day over hoping your key forward shows up.

there was a time when the likes of Messi and CR were so clearly above the rest that it made sense for their teams to depend on them. but once they begin to decline, the whole team will suffer due to its insufficiencies

its also the case that there are fewer and fewer proper 9s. haaland seems to me like one, but not mbappe, who is more of a winger than a 9

Mbappe plays on the flank, but he is ultimately an inside forward, the reincarnation of CR, i guess.

im not so sure about that. sure: this mbappe (at age what, 21?) is like the young CR--a pacy winger that can score.

as we well know though CR became, especially after his second season at Real, much more of a center forward. he did this with great effect. im not sure mbappe can replicate this. he is much more Henry than CR (which i realize sort of undermines my claim because Henry also became a forward )--but i hope you get my point

CR wasn't a CF until his last few years at the club, he was an inside forward for the majority of his time here.

city meets EL level teams most of the time in first 2 rounds of CL KOs. of course they spank them.

what i'm trying to say is that all the teams that had good/great results in CL over the past 2 decades had some legendary forwards.

man utd - ronaldo, rooney, tevez
ac milan - shevchenko, inzaghi, kaka, crespo
barcelona - ronaldinho, eto'o, messi, neymar, suarez
bayern - ribery, robben, lewandowski
real - raul, ronaldo, benzema

i dont disagree--in fact, thats my point exactly. having a front three ensures that the burden of goal scoring is more equitably distributed!
