and yes cocaine is a PED

Athletes May Use Cocaine to Gain an Edge in Their Sport

Does Cocaine Enhance Performance?
Health Risks from Cocaine Abuse
Cocaine, which is derived from the coca plant,[1] has a long history of use for gaining an athletic edge. The Incan culture of South America regularly used coca leaves to give them extra energy as they made their way through the high altitudes of the Andes Mountains. Incan runners who would sprint many miles between mountain towns to deliver important messages would carry purses filled with coca leaves to give them the energy and endurance needed to complete their job as quickly as possible

Messi's had way more match winning performances v top tier opposition than Maradona over the course of his career.

It's just that Maradona had the single greatest tournament ever so people forget all his other failures in 1990 WC and at the club level with Napoli (in European Cup)

Cocaine is notable for distorting the user's perception of reality; for example, an athlete may perceive increased performance and decreased fatigue in the face of actual decreased performance in both strength and endurance activities

When Maradona came, Napoli were in shambles.

He almost singlehandedly won them multiple trophies and took them to the top of the best league in the world by far.

Maradona is the OG and only carry-job guy!

Napoli took two to three seasons from Maradona arrived till they won the Serie A title, and they did that by also developing other players and acquiring others.

Maradona was of course the best player of the team and the league then, very easily too, but it wasn't one man a carry job. It just doesn't exist in football with 11 players on the pitch. More relevant in sports such as basketball where a single player can make such a huge difference.

They went from 11th --> Maradona arrives --> to 8th --> 3rd --> Scudetto

Carry-job like you said is a pretty mythical phrase. It doesn't exist irl.

But the context in which this phrase is thrown around, I must say that what Maradona did was much more of a "carry-job" than the great players today.

It's not to say Diego wasn't an exceptional player he certainly was.

But easy GOAT? Nah

No one except Argentinians said he was the "easy GOAT" though.

There's no easy GOAT. Otherwise people wouldn't have so many debates. There's a GOAT tier where you can form arguments for each player in that tier.

On top of that, I'll throw the cliched-but-true conclusion that it's so difficult to compare eras.

Much easier to just compare Messi and Ronaldo and start throwing insults at each other.😂

Here's a slightly weird theory, hear me out:

The addiction has actually helped Maradona's legacy in a weird way. It's given him sort of a troubled genius vibe which makes for great stories for generations to tell and adds a special aura.

People are like: Look at him, he doesn't even care, just pure natural talent and imagine if he actually took it seriously.

It's like what happens with R9 where some people go: Oh if he had knees he'd be the GOAT and shit like that.

Of all the players I have seen (I can't judge Pele, Di Stefano, Cruyff..) for me the 2 best players are Maradona and Messi by far.
In terms of pure talent, Maradona is unique.

Messi was only a few Higuain finishes from bathing in international trophies. That and his own pen miss would've gotten him at least 3 more trophies, including a WC.

Argentinians are subjective in that discussion. Since they're Argentinians, all they care about (obviously) is international football.

When did it become relevant what Argies think about it?

since when did it matter that catalans favour barcelona? that they have a sentimental attachment to players like pep and xavi who are catalan?

what a ridiculous thing to say

argentinians are precisely the most who stand to benefit from messi's prowess and fame (since it reflects well on them, as peles legacy does to brazilians) and so the ones who are most apt to judge just who successful he was, esp relative to other argentinian greats, above all maradona

and guess what? in argentina, Maradona >>>> messi

lolo maradona took napoli to the top of italian football at a time when it was the strongest league with the very best players

maradona made a joke of sacchis milan on sveral occasions

the messi bubble is dense indeed

messi was lucky enough to play with the greatest ever spaniards xavi and iniesta among others

and he never again won a CL after xaviesta split up. not even MSN could do it

GOAT of all time: maradona
greatest fc barcelona players: xavi and iniesta
greatest CL player: CR
greatest la liga and copa player: messi
