It wont be in end when there is more distance and folk look back at his career as a whole and next season is to come.

Will be seen as him having declined a bit as got older and folk will use the argument of being most decorated player ever if achieves that.

What are your expectations from Messi in Qatar ??

It'll always be a blot on his CV that when he did move to a different league: a vastly inferior league nonetheless, he looked half the player.

Compare that to the romanticism attached to being a one club man...

He was 34 when he moved with already 950 professional games under his legs. And fresh off a major cup trophy for Argentina which was the only missing thing on his CV.

If you think he would struggle in other leagues when he was 24 and in his prime scoring 70-90 goals and 20-30 assists a year, you're deluded.

And if you don't think that, then the absolutist statements like the bolded are trolling.

He wouldn't "struggle' in other leagues when he was 24 but he certainly wouldn't have been the same player he was for Barcelona.

His Argentina career backs that up as well.

You suggested he would score like 25 league goals for City back in his prime, didn't you?

Not really. Ironically, his worst moments in Argentina happened between 2008-2011.

He performed well as an individual for Argentina from 2012-2021 with the exception of 2018-2019.

I don't disagree that he peformed well but he was not near his Barcelona standard.

I'll just stick to facts since perception is subjective.

During his prime from 2009-2019, he played 69 competitive matches for Argentina and scored 30 goals. A ratio of .43 goals per game. That same time he was scoring about a goal per game with Barcelona.

By comparison, Neymar and Suarez both have higher career scoring ratios with their national teams in competitie matches.

Neymar’s career ratio in competitive matches is .57 while Suarez’s is .47. Those are career ratios as well which include a ton of matches for Suarez outside his peak scoring form.

Suarez is nowhere near Messi at this age and Neymar the argument would be he declined in 20s compared to Messi at 34.

Hardly any great stick to hit Messi with.
