Birdy, you kind of not give him credit after he's proven himself. He led his team to a legit World Cup win after 30something years. And was the best player in this final, when you look at the whole picture.

Don't see how that is anything but fair.

Of course this doesn't mean he's now the unanimous goat or some thing like that, but he's achieved all there is. Like some other legendary greats did before him.

Every criticism of him he destroyed this WC run.

People said he didn't perform in KO rounds - He did.

People said he doesn't show leadership - He did

People said he doesn't perform in finals - He did

Player of the Tournament and World Champion.

Listen, there is something I really hate, which is subjectivity and blowing reality out of proportion to fit narratives and essentially personal agendas based on fanaticism

I am more inclined to say Messi is the unanimous goat (which can also be deduced more objectively based on stats)
than imagining he did things in this WC which he never did

Don't forget the whole myth of him being a PK choker compared to CR7 (who missed before in CL final 08, CL SFs 08, and CL SFs 12)...

scored 5 pens in 5 in WC QFs, SFs, and finals

Revenge never tasted so sweet

He certainly delivered more than any other 35 yo has before at this level, scored in the toughest matches when it mattered and made the team play for him like animals.
This team with literally anyone else instead of Messi, would be out from the groups. That's what he did. No more, no less.

Honestly a big, underrated part of this Argentina team playing like this was also the players willing to die for Messi. A lot of these players grew up watching him play and were willing to do whatever it takes for him.

Easy to forget this Argentina team is relatively young. Quite inexperienced.

Winning the 2016 Euro was a great achievement (despite not even playing in the final), but you can‘t be considered in the Pantheon(let alone the GOAT) with this WC career. We all agree that Portugal is no juggernaut, but they were good enough to win the Euros, weren‘t they. They were good enough to reach the semis with a young CR. Failing to even reach the QF and to even score a KO goal, is indeed a massive disappointment. You would expect that a player of his status would at least reach the semis once or twice in his prime. Portugal are no Feroe Islands. Look at Croatia and Modric for example.

Sure. That's a big red mark on his CV. From the GOAT contenders, CR7 has the worst WC exploits.

Messi did too but he turned it completely around this WC. I think the 2014 Golden Ball was a farce and consolation since Robben and James performed better in that tournament and Messi was an afterthought in the knockout rounds.

Let's look at it as a team. Portugal winning a Euro is a far bigger achievement than Argentina winning the Copa owing to the frequency of the tournaments, the number of teams and the competition. I think we all agree with this.

With the WC now Messi has a better and a complete CV.

Messi will pick up a couple of cheap trophies in the Uber Eats League and end up as the most decorated player ever surpassing Alves.

The last 2 years have completely changed the perception of his international career which was a huge red mark in his CV.

He shouldn't come to MLS too early IMO.

You don't go from being the best player in a WC final against an elite NT (France) to MLS.

His MLS time will come in 1.5 years, not this summer.

Messi will look back at these last 2 years as his fondest years. The 2 most important years for his legacy.

Unfortunately the 2 years he wasn't associated with Barca. It's a bit sad. It's like he had to separate from Barca to break his international duck.

For the Ballon d'Or, if Messi has a similar impact in CL with Mbappe for PSG, he should win it.

I hope they are out in Last 16 vs Bayern to make it clearer. Win - win.
