Their squad isn't that good. They don't have a single good midfielder, their back line is aging, RVP is aging (arguably past it), etc. IMO, the squad needs serious reinforcement.

Tbh we never really buy top class players obviously there has been a few like tevez and berba (RVP and Mata being under different circumstances) we buy young, talented and hungry players and improve them. I think LvG will be looking at the likes of shaw, kolisinac, depay, kovacic,mccarthy and similar player who wont be too costly and have room to improve.
All the talk of Cesc, Kroos , Reus etc just wouldnt really fit how we generally tend to do things.

Let's see how they do in the transfer window. LVG is vastly superior to Moyes, but he's not a miracle worker. He's still joining at a time when all of United's legends are leaving or retiring. He'll need to sign a new CB, a DM, and a CM. Maybe even a winger since Valencia is well past it. After all that is said and done, they have to gel properly and hopefully avoid a Tottenham situation.
Now the question is: can they get those top class signings while not offering champions league football? Can they get them even with the world cup in the way? Can they fight off the oil clubs who will offer better wages AND champions league? It will definitely be an uphill climb.
