Exactly, it's not like those are the only two options out there. Lucho needs to look outside Spain and cut this former player bias. We can do much better.

He'd be a good transfer. People keep brining young players. It's too early for that on our front spots. For all we know MSN might have 3-4 seasons of playing 75-80% of the games during each season, and 100% of the most important ones for sure (let's face it, it's not like you have MSN fit and you leave one of them on the bench in a tough game).

No young player would thrive with so few chances to play.

Nolito or Gameiro are some of the best options. Nolito is more of a winger sub, better in combinations, Gameiro is more of a goalscorer (no9 type) and might have more international experience. I'd go with Nolito myself, because he seems to have superior technique on the ball. Gameiro might be better for a team which plays on the counter, while Nolito is more accustomed with possession-based attacking play.

Anyway, we should buy one of them, and concentrate on the defence issues. It's not like 20m. is a lot for a player as good as Nolito. It's basically a good price for the current market.

20m for Nolito is extremely expensive if he lasts 9 months at a decent level, then turns crap because of age and we are stuck with him for 4 years until he leaves on a free transfer though. He has zero sell-on value and will demand a big fat last paycheck. Lets see how expensive Arda will turn out to be if he continues down the path he is heading right now. Buying a young player who has 10 years ahead of him at a high level can be much, much cheaper when you divide the transfer fee over 10 years instead of 1 or 2 years. Perhaps someone like Thomas Lemar from Monaco, who can play both midfield and on either wing, is a great dribbler and has a rocket of a shot. At least we know that we dont have to replace him in a year if he turns out to be good for us, unlike Nolito who is just so old we dont know.

buying a player of his age is very risky especially at 20 M
because you never know when he's gonna blow and fade

imagine we buy him, pay 20 M
spends the first 5 games on the bench for MSN,
then he plays his first game and then each game is worse than the previous one. news alert decline mode triggered

somewhat a similar thing happened to Arda

The entire reason the defense is still an issue is because we approached it the same way in 2014 by buying good but not great elderly Mathieu and Verm. Now the market has inflated even more since then and whenever Mascherano leaves his long term replacement will cost way more than it would have back then. Waiting 3 to 4 years to buy an understudy for MSN is madness. Prices will get even higher in that time and we will be renovating a stadium on top of that. The idea that Nolito will still be putting in performances at 33 or 34 is something I have a hard time believing as well when considering his playing style.

Will he only be a back-up for Neymar? The guy only plays on the left, nowhere else. Who will we have to rest Messi and Suarez? Should've bought Dembele who can play all positions up front and and use both his feet. What did Dortmund pay for a 18 year old wonderkid like him again? 14M?

Dembele never plays as striker.Only winger and AM.
We have other players who can play out wide but not a real striker besides Suarez so i would prefer to sign someone like Vietto.

What is madness is buying an 'understudy' to MSN right now and expecting that player to just sit on the sidelines for 3 or 4 years. There is no way any world class or potential world class player would be willing to just sacrifice a couple of seasons with the promise of perhaps becoming a starter in the future. It's just not how anything in football works.

Prices will indeed keep rising, but sponsorship & TV money will rise with them. That's natural as football is becoming a bigger business. This idea that fees and wages will become unpayable is misguided. Just look at our new sponsorship contract with Nike and compare it how much we got so far - we could get as much as 120m per season more than before. When we sign the new contract with whatever shirt sponsor, we'll have another couple of dozen millions more per season. So, we will never be in a position where we just can't afford a player.

Certainly, if you look at the big picture, buying a world class player right now to play maybe 10 games a season for years before having any chance at becoming a starter would be far riskier and potentially far more costly than buying players according to our actual needs. Nolito's level right now is far beyond the 18 million we would have to pay for him and even just 2 or 3 or 4 seasons on that level would be fine by me. Villa cost 40 million, had only 1 very good season and no one here would say buying him was a mistake.

There are many footballers that believe in themselves regardless of how fruitless the average fan thinks their efforts will be. It's the only reason big clubs are able to hoard talent in the first place. There will always be a player younger than 30 willing to take the chance.I cant even count how many times I've heard why would young player X go to Super club Y and the players still go and do the opposite of what fans think is the right career path. If they fail or get impatient you will at least get your money back when they move on. I honestly can't believe we've reached the stage where there is no middle ground between young talent and 30 years. Villa was a good transfer because he was one the best players in the world and he was a starter. The squad was not mainly consisting of important players on the wrong side of 29 back in 2010 either. I wouldn't have a problem if the squad still had a major youthful element as it did back then.
