There is a huge difference and that is Varane's speed and height. Alba and Alves are mediocre defenders, but they get away with it just because of their sheer pace. Bartra in my opinion is a poor man's Pique, without Pique's amazing ball playing ability.

Also Bartra is no kid either..He is 22 years old since January.

Bartra is a sweeper type CB but doesn't have the ball playing abilities of Pique. Most of his long balls fly off the pitch horribly. Although he's still young and should be trained up to be a good backup or even replacement for Pique. He has good positioning but his tackling is very shaky and dismal. He has height and motivation aerially, but not much control and dominance. Not nearly as good as Varane, but still an above average prospect.

Pique's on the ball skills that are exceptional are more his footwork than his long passing. Ramos has a better long ball but Pique and Bartra have excellent dribbling ability. None of them come close to the Kaiser Marquez though. Even in his last season he was getting out paced and out muscled but when the ball left his foot it still landed like a pillow.

pep played him plenty at that stage of his development, notice also that under pep he actually look a good prospect whenever he got a chance to play.

the x player and y age thing is a pretty crap argument.

though i am not saying batra is better than varane, but varane would have started at 19 for us under pep or tito

Are you for real?

Pep barely gave him any time at all.

He played something like two games that meant nothing.

Maybe that's because he wasn't even in the first team squad, FFS. Using that logic, it would seem that Deulofeu is not a good prospect either, since he didn't play much this season.

Plenty? There were two appearances in total. He should have played 20 plus games this year but the 16 he played were still double the total amount of the last 2 years.

Tello and Cuence were not in the first team squad either and played plenty.

It makes little difference.

Jamrock was the one that said he played plenty.

I remember first time I saw Bartra played for 1st team it was vs Atletico away, I don't quite remember about what time he entered the pitch, but it was like 10 or 5 minutes before game ended. He was played at right back, all he did when he got the ball is give it back to Puyi. One time he gave ball to Puyi but Aguero was also nearby Puyi and went to press made Puyi gave a corner, Puyi looks so pissed

I remember that game, too. Was this the time when Pep started Jeffren as a RB? It was a really shocking decision. But brave, too. Typical for Pep :D

Not only that Pep started Jefferen at RB, but Dalmau was the one training with the 1st team all week yet didn't make the team that week.

Have you been watching the under 21s? His long passes out to Tello especially have been sublime, his passing is better than Varane's. Ability on the ball and passing is one of his biggest strengths, IMO.

He's much better than above average as well!
