Yeah, I'm sure Puyol isn't sufficiently intelligent and experienced to face an attacker who has him beat on pace. It would surely catch him off guard and he'd look clueless.

...

It's not just that he's facing an attacker who has him beat on pace, it's that he's old and coming back from injury and coming up against one of the best attackers in the world, who is in monstrous shape and in great form. Playing Puyol out in the center is one thing, playing him out wide is completely different.

Jezus people using 1 example of Puyol getting beat (because he slips) to say he wouldn't cut it at RB against Madrid.

That's explanation is a lot better than the one you gave with the gif.

All the same, playing him out wide could very reasonably be considered an upgrade to playing Alves there, who would also be facing Ronaldo and has regularly been extremely poor in terms of his defensive positioning and effort this season, which are two things we would not see from Puyol.
I understand he's not a clear favorite to completely shut Ronaldo down, but you talked about it as though it was some kind of an idiotic idea which is guaranteed to backfire, which is heavy on the nonsense for me.

I say play Bartra against RM, look, the only way he will learn is to put him against the best opossition, i really don't like how some here are acting like they are scared if we put him in the match.
What the kid needs is expirience, he doesn't need to be sheltered like a small child, im sure he would find it insulting if he read some of your comments about how he is not ready and how we should protect his confidence as if he was some wimp.
Varane came out of knowhere and had a very good performance against barca when he was still very much green(even greener than Marc).
I have confidence in the kid, and i think Tito also has it, im also sure someone like Pep would also have confidence and would put him in if he were still coach.
Bartra is playing in a profesional division 1 league with the big men now, lets start treating him like one.If he fails then he will learn from his mistakes if he is tough minded(like he has shown so far after what happened against Bayern).

When playing against Bayern, what exactly did he 'learn' ?

He needs to play the big games, to learn and improve.... He's 22 and imo ready to play these games. At least give him the chance before Judging him. He could be the solution... Playing 2 SHORT fullbacks again vs RM, we'll concede from set pieces (corners), you can't stop Cristiano+Ramos+Pepe/Varane with 2 short FBs!

We used to have Pique+Puyol+Abidal and Yaya/Keita. Now we only have Pique!

The fact that he is a much better player now than he was back then. That semifinal could have broken him but it didn't, it's obvious he worked his ass off in the off season and has come back much improved which shows his mental toughness.

I have been overly impressed by his performances of recent especially his long range shootings. . . I love those. But I will only be convinced when I see him nullify a WC attacker.
