Marquinhos

Best midfielder around
He is 1.83 cm, the same as Thiago Silva who is the best centre back in the world.

After a first 20M bid was rejected, Barcelona are preparing a 25M bid for Roma centre back Marquinhos (18). [corriere dello sport]

:D Sorry Pearl but this is one rumor that truly excites me!

10M for Varane... And Barca is willing to pay 25M for Marquinhos? Hope it's not true.

If we spend 25m on him, it'll be a risk IMO, with him being so young and all. He could be our own Varane, or he could flop. A bit like what Neymar will be for whoever buys him (though Marquinhos is less risky IMO, since he has some experience in a top league).
Anyways, I doubt that 25m figure is true. If he's cheap and we have cash left over after our other signings (GK, CB, maybe a new FW, etc) he could be a good signing for depth and competition in the CB spot. He may even push one of the CBs out like Varane did.

I doubt Marquinhos will ever be a total flop. He might not be at this level of form all the time but he looks really reliable overall. If the management decides to buy him they'll probably negotiate the price down or change the terms (i.e give him back on loan to Roma for a few seasons). 25 million is a steep price but it's almost 100000x better that we overspend on a CB than an attacking player like Neymar. One is necessary, the other isn't.

Recovery pace. I had forgotten what it looked like. If we could get him now, do it. Rather than wait till he cost Thiago Silva money.

A piece from Julian De Martinis when asked if Marco will go to Barca:

"Well, first of all, I want to preface this by saying what I did in a different thread: Roma have no reason to sell him. He's on year one of a four or five year deal (I forget at the moment; believe it was 4 year initially but Roma are on the verge of giving him a raise and an additional year), and the club's project means that Marquinhos, Pjanic, and Destro are the building blocks. The whole point of what Sabatini did the past two years was to find talents like those three; to sell them means we're the next Udinese, while the management has made it very clear that they want us to be the next Barcelona.

So, all that being said, let's still say hypothetically he moves to Barca. You have to understand one thing: he's 18. This is his first season playing in Europe and he's only played 20 Serie A games. Ever. He's never played in a European competition; never in a match where a trophy was on the line. Roma this season has been an ideal setting: there's massive pressure, to be sure, but no trophies on the line.

In short, I can't say for sure he isn't a one-season wonder, or that he'll flop whenever trophies are on the line.

I can say that, from what I've seen, which is every match he's played in, he looks far, far more likely to me to become a widely known and respected world-class CB than anything else. His positioning is usually phenomenal; he reads the game better than almost any other defender we've had since Juan was great; he knows when to tackle, when to chase, and how to use his athleticism in the rare cases that someone does get past him. He's bailed out our defense more times than I can count in those 20 games.

Will he stay like that forever? Will he still be that good next season? I suspect yes, but the sample size is really small right now. I think moving to Barca this summer would be a massive mistake after merely one year in Europe; the jump to a club that's consistently in the hunt for a treble is just too high, and I think many players ruin their careers and stunt their growth by moving to big sides where they just rot on the bench.

I mean, look at Nuri Sahin; was his Madrid move really worth it? He's back where he started now with a year less of starting football. More money is always nice but so is always playing (I know Barca need CBs, so this might not apply exactly to Marquinhos, but the jist is the same: big clubs come with a lot more responsibility and squad rotation in general)."

Thanx.

Indeed. Even if Roma accepted the possible offer it would be a mistake for us to fork 25 mil. to risk it on the youngster and big big pressure on the kid to perform.

Good piece. Kind of sobered me up a little actually. I'd still like him but loaning him back to Roma for a season or even 2 could pay off in the long run and give him experience. We can live until then, especially if Bartra starts gaining more trust from the management. Honestly I think the media went overboard with the 25 million thing. 17-18 million sounds like a more believable bid. Still a little expensive, but believable. It's best not to bring him in so rushed and quickly in an emergency-like situation because that puts more pressure on him to perform. Once we've even slightly gotten control of the defensive situation he'd be coming in without the weight of the world on his shoulders.

If the rumors of the 20m bid and the refusal are true, then I don't think adding 5m makes a difference. Rejecting the 20m itself is a bold statement of Roma's intentions. Roma is in the midst of a renovation and the latest player acquisitions are merely part of a larger plan to revive itself. Like Julian said, it's contradictory to the current plans if we go about selling not only our best defender, but one of the best sub-20 defenders in the whole of Europe.

Plus joining Barca, or any top club for that matter, always involves the risk of being wasted on the bench. He mentions Nuri Sahin, who I genuinely feel sorry for. His ambition to play for a top club led him to rotting on Real's bench, for sporting reasons as well his injury, and to then go on loan to a midtable Liverpool, before rejoining his old club only to find his starting spot rightfully taken and another seat on the bench.

Marco is now playing in a pressure-less club, I mean Roma's goal of the season is to qualify for the Europa. Perfect situation for a prospect to find his feet in and nurture his talent to reach his potential. Hopefully his individual growth also propels the team forward and helps it grow back to its early 2000's level.
