Martin Montoya

Barçapocalypse NOW!
He better improve fast if he wants to get that renewal...

He was lost on the pitch tonight, didn't know whether to defender or attack and just stayed half way... This hasn't been a good season for him...

Better renew Alves. Montoya is far from being a starter.

I've said it before, I don't see Barca starter caliber talent from Montoya. If the team wants a starter caliber talent fullback for the future, they better go out and find it, Montoya isn't it.

Montoya showed some excellent moments, but showed an equal amount of terrible, boneheaded ones and was really poor today. I still believe he can become good for us, but with Alves as old as he is he needs to start putting in consistently good performances and raise his level to what is required.

Sumlit - this we agree on.

He doesnt dominate his side of the pitch the way a full back at Barca needs to.

Plays it safe too often and generally looks nervous and held back.

I've said that 1000 times, bad passing, bad decisions, bad defending etc. He is not even good enough to be our backup. He and Song needs to go and replaced with better players.

A right back at Barca doesn't need to dominate the flank. Hell Alves doing that pretty much suffocates the winger on his side half the time. A fullback in attack shouldn't be demanding the ball 24/7, they complement the winger with overlaps, keep width with their movement, and provide an extra threat going forward with linkup/crosses. That's how an efficient fullback should function. They need to go from the back->forward in smartly timed moments rather than stay pushed up permanently and then do their defensive duties.

Montoya can do all of that if he grows well. He can be reserved and still succeed while letting Alba being the more attacking fullback. Both know that their home begins from defense and goes forward when needed rather than the wild winger stuff Alves does.

Alves doesnt 'suffocate' the wide players at all.

The full backs at Barca do need to dominate their side of the pitch.

You are massively wrong on how you rate Alves and Montoya and need to accept it.

You've talked about how Messi's presence constantly degrades our wingers performances, I'd like to remember the last time Alves helped Alexis perform any better. You can constantly see in games and action maps that Alves takes up the winger's space, demands the ball for himself, and plays the predictable unnecessary cross. There's no logic to support that a fullback (a DEFENDER) should be the one playing dictator on the flank. The fullback is there to provide the extra option when needed to outnumber their markers. That is the common sense of football. The only reason you say that a fullback should be the dominating attacking force is because Alves does it and therefore Alves is right.

I dont think you even understand the system they are playing!

Sanchez is not there to be the winger, going forward Alves is supposed to take the width and let Sanchez or whoever get closer to Messi.

Alves is inhibiting Sanchez so much he is on for his best ever season in terms of goals and assists!

Come back when you can name one fullback in the world that has contributed to so many goals and assists along with the wide player on front of him as Alves has the last 5/6 years.

Heres a tip.... you wont be able to.
