Seing Monotoya play last season and this one, I think the biggest difference is that he seems to go forward far too much this season (leaving the defense vulnerable), while that wasn't the case last season. Could argue that he's being told to play that way.

Don't think so but his development has certainly stalled

Not stalled but declined instead of improving he has gotten worse and its strange

Yes, you could actually say he declined. He was fantastic for part of the last season and it also did wonders to Alves, when he had to fight for his spot he got much better.

Official: Barcelona announce the contract renewal of right back Martin Montoya (22) for four more years, until 2018, buyout fee 20M

Good news. Let's hope he can get his progress back on track. He can still be a good player for us.

Another low release clause by the way.....

Martin Montoya's new contract, until 2018, will include an initial buyout fee of 20M. It will rise depending on the games he will play. [md]

Just as with Bartra, Montoya's BO clause is just fine. If Inter feels like throwing 20M on the table for him, then be my guest.

At no point last season did Alves have to fight for his spot.

Yeah, let's just pretend the string of great games he had in autumn 2012 just didn't happen, suits most people's opinion on him better if they just tell themselves he was never good to begin with

Where did I say anything like that? Where did I even imply it?

Alves was never, and I mean NEVER under any threat of losing his spot to Montoya. Whether he was playing great in Fall 2012 has absolutely nothing to do with that.

Happy about this...I like Montoya a lot, even if he's shown poor composure at times - I blame spotty minutes but he'll have every opportunity to show his quality going forward...Should be a boost for his confidence and hopefully the best is yet to come from the player

I remember Montoya being rated as one of the most promising youngsters by a lot of people just a bit more than a year ago. His lack of minutes under Tito certainly must have had a big contribution to his current stagnation in development. Happy about his renewal either way!
