Exactly.
A lack of effort on training.
But also a lack of skills needed for Barca's level.

Montoya is considering to discuss his situation with Luis Enrique. The right back so far only started one game this season. [md]
I really hope the transfer ban is lifted. If not, that Alves renews, or we could be in big trouble.
whereas Montoya could possibly give you steady performance every game.
I think you're overrating him a bit. He hasn't shown any indications of that.

I think by steady performance he means Montoya can be consistently decent as a RB for us instead of the roller coaster with more drops than you climb in Alves
Montoya is really underrated in here. Look at all the other top teams in the world and except for Lahm there is no other RB in the world that could do what most of the people here ask expect our RB to do.
Carvajal, Juanfran, Zabaleta, Ivanovic/Azpi, Piszczek, Rafael, Debuchy, Van der Wiel, Lichtsteiner etc. These guys play for the biggest clubs. (I do not rate VdW, Rafael and Debuchy really high though)
All these players have their weaknesses and cause problems from time to time. Some make mistakes in defense, some do not offer enough in offense etc.
The fullback position is extremely hard to master and in the last years prime Dani and Lahm were the best players in that role. Other players will probably not reach that level.
BUT players that are listed above were trusted by their clubs and are solid RBs now.
Montoya needs time to develop and show if he can make it or not. Imo there is no question that Montoya is good enough for Barca and good enough to play in the league and CL. The question is if he will become good enough to play against the likes of Real, Atletico, Bayern, Chelsea etc.
No one will ever be able to tell if Montoya continues to rot on the bench.
^That's not how things stand right now IMO. Alves on a bad day still brings more to our attack than Montoya on a great day. Montoya is a limited player in offense, and since Lucho sees his fullbacks as attacking weapons first, it's no surprise he's the 3rd choice after Alves and Douglas.
Montoya is your typical fullback for a 6th to 10th place La Liga team.
What? Alves on a bad day would keep peppering those useless crosses in while get f*cked while defending and be among our worst if not our worst player out there. If you think Montoya is that bad then it's nothing but your obvious bias for Alves.
There's no need to be biased in an Alves vs Montoya debate. It's like saying a BMW is better than a Fiat. That's not being biased, even if you are german. It's common sense.
The BMW is rusty and runs on flat tires though. The Fiat would win the race because of that.
