Montoya is considering to discuss his situation with Luis Enrique. The right back so far only started one game this season. [md]

I really hope the transfer ban is lifted. If not, that Alves renews, or we could be in big trouble.

As seemingly god awful as Montoya is, the thought of him leaving is a terrifying one. Alves is almost certainly gone this summer, so that would leave us with Lord Douglas as our only RB. Would we make Adriano our starter and pray he doesn't get injured to force us into using Douglas or do we promote Elohor Godswill and stay patient with him as he adapts?

I don't think Montoya is going anywhere. He'll speak with Lucho and Lucho will ask him for a little patience and Montoya will acquiesce. Alves' days at Barca are numbered. Everyone, even probably the player himself, knows this. All Montoya needs to do is be a good soldier, train and give effort and have a little patience, and he'll get his chance.

I do think he should be getting more playing time. I personally don't think Montoya will ever be a great fullback, however Alves is at the point of a player's career where his decline only allows him to have great performances sporadically. I think Montoya right now is not better than current Alves on one of his great performance days, but current Alves is only able to give you those games in about 5 or 6 games, whereas Montoya could possibly give you steady performance every game.

^That's not how things stand right now IMO. Alves on a bad day still brings more to our attack than Montoya on a great day. Montoya is a limited player in offense, and since Lucho sees his fullbacks as attacking weapons first, it's no surprise he's the 3rd choice after Alves and Douglas.

Montoya is your typical fullback for a 6th to 10th place La Liga team.

I think you're overrating him a bit. He hasn't shown any indications of that.

I think by steady performance he means Montoya can be consistently decent as a RB for us instead of the roller coaster with more drops than you climb in Alves

Yes I meant what Behrox said. Even if Montoya's game is average, I think he can give that consistently. Whereas Alves' games is too up and down of late. More down than up as the days go by.

Montoya is really underrated in here. Look at all the other top teams in the world and except for Lahm there is no other RB in the world that could do what most of the people here ask expect our RB to do.
Carvajal, Juanfran, Zabaleta, Ivanovic/Azpi, Piszczek, Rafael, Debuchy, Van der Wiel, Lichtsteiner etc. These guys play for the biggest clubs. (I do not rate VdW, Rafael and Debuchy really high though)
All these players have their weaknesses and cause problems from time to time. Some make mistakes in defense, some do not offer enough in offense etc.

The fullback position is extremely hard to master and in the last years prime Dani and Lahm were the best players in that role. Other players will probably not reach that level.
BUT players that are listed above were trusted by their clubs and are solid RBs now.

Montoya needs time to develop and show if he can make it or not. Imo there is no question that Montoya is good enough for Barca and good enough to play in the league and CL. The question is if he will become good enough to play against the likes of Real, Atletico, Bayern, Chelsea etc.
No one will ever be able to tell if Montoya continues to rot on the bench.

Lucho coached Barça B while Montoya was there, and played him a lot. If he's rotting on the bench now, that's on him. Even roberto is getting to play. And this trend is not new. The rumors that he doesn't give his all in training never faded. And there is a big question to whether or not he is good enough to play for Barça. So far he hasn't showed he is. Most of the players you listed are better than him, btw.

If anything, Montoya is not underrated, but overrated by some.

What? Alves on a bad day would keep peppering those useless crosses in while get f*cked while defending and be among our worst if not our worst player out there. If you think Montoya is that bad then it's nothing but your obvious bias for Alves.

Not saying Alves is a complete liability, but like the others have said, he is too up and down these days where on a great day he'll be awesome attacking and making the right decisions and okay behind and on a bad day, cost us a win due to his stupid performance and behaving like a headless chicken.

There's no need to be biased in an Alves vs Montoya debate. It's like saying a BMW is better than a Fiat. That's not being biased, even if you are german. It's common sense.

The BMW is rusty and runs on flat tires though. The Fiat would win the race because of that.
