Manchester United target Mats Hummels has admitted the prospect of playing at Old Trafford appeals to him.

Hummels , who scored a header in Germany's 4-0 win against Portugal in Salvador on Monday, is new United boss Louis van Gaal’s top defensive target this summer.

Although United are also pursuing Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having left this summer, Borussia Dortmund defender Hummels is their main target and they are confident they can land him.

But Hummels, rated at £24million, said his focus was only on the World Cup and he would leave the subject of his future until after the tournament.

“I never think about that or talk about it because it is something that isn’t important for me right now,” Hummels said.

“Maybe it will be some day, but I don’t expect it to be like that this summer.”

Hummels, 25, has formed an impressive partnership with Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker in the middle of the Germany defence and said Joachim Low's side can become the first European side to win a World Cup in South America.

“If we are concentrated and focused, both defensively and offensively, then we are a good team and that is the way we play,” Hummels said.

“If we can do that in every game, we are going to have a good chance to be very successful.
