Mavericky Puig

The coaches are crazy, let him start atleast one fucking match.

A player who could play well against Atletico is too bad for U21 ?

Nice video with Ray commenting, a shame it's so zoomed in
Just want to point to some sequences from that old game, as we get to see so little from Puig now

1:18 - the forward movement, and then the step back to create space after the pass went to Suarez, such a small thing but very telling
1:30 - an example of his pressing
2:47 - another ball won nicely by quick pressing
2:54 - yes magic!

I tired of timestamping and just sat and enjoyed the rest. A nice game, should've counted the times he won the ball.... He also made a couple of bad passes, but you are right, it's impossible to think that that player shouldn't get to play more in Barcelona or in Spain u21.

This kid has a real passionate, risky way of playing the game. I mean when he's out there he goes all out- he plays to excel and stand out at every touch and every moment of the game- he has a real fire in him which is a fantastic thing to see in a player.

But I do believe it plays against him when picking the starting 11. A lot of managers tend to favor players who offer reassurance, like Pedri for example, instead of a little Maverick like Puig. It's just a thought.

It's a damn shame because I do believe this kid is special. His attitude alone should merit much more. It's top notch.

Agreed. Takes a special manager to see his quality and take the risk with him. Most managers are conservative boring duds. Sometimes he has too much personality and passion for his own sake.

I think it is just size. If he is built like Ilaix or Nico even, he breaks into the first team quicker, replaces his eagerness with experience and starts every game.

Sure Puig comes in cameos or starts against weaker teams and looks good, but can he do it week in week out? Maybe there's data from training that suggests against it. And to prove he can he should go to another LaLiga side before he is 23/24 and the next prospect is coming through and the next and the next.

Here are his LaLiga2 stats in 2018, a year older than Pedri. Hardly featured, hardly played.

Every coach will see his qualities... and his weaknesses.

Koeman is not playing him more has nothing to do with him not being a 'special manager' and Puig having 'too much personality and passion'.

What special coaches out there are going to take Puig from Barca? None would be my guess.

It is his size in a team already lacking that which is the biggest issue.

My thoughts are similar.
I would want to see him week in week out to see if he would really evolve in the way I think or not. In the video from the Atleti game he misplaced a few passes which looked to be because he was too eager and ambitious, and I hate to see these kind of mistakes from a player, I would not continue to shill for him if I found out that was part of his game. But that was the only fault in that video, his size was just a nonfactor - he won the ball more than anybody and was better in both small spaces close to opponents and in large spaces, where he usually finds himself due to good positioning. The great Atletico midfielders couldn't catch him, but he could catch them, it's ridiculous to talk about him being too small after a game like that. But I agree that is probably the reasoning in the managers small heads :)

He was a regular in the winning UEFA youth league team that year, though? I have to admit I never saw him or even heard of him before Barcelona A...

His profile and skill set just isn't in demand or valued by coaches tbh. It's that simple. On the other hand, players with the profile of Modric, Bruno Fernandes, Gundogan etc are what coaches are looking for. They are good in possession, press resistant, combine well etc but they can also get forward into the box, score goals from range, win duels, more durable, etc. They have a lot more to offer imo. Even in la liga how many teams are playing with those type of players like Puig or Trigueros? Not much.

Spain U21 lacked creatively in the midfield. Could Riqui Rondo make an appearance in tomorrows game vs Czech Republic?

Pedri isn't exactly built like a tank, yet he starts almost every game.
I just wondering why that is.

No Puig despite alot of changes in the lineup.

He is basically in the bottom three squad options along with the 3rd choice goalkeeper and the 18 year old Yeremi Pino.

I suspect if the result is under control that Puig (and Yeremi) will get the chance to show he is the top 5minute footballer in the world.

Good news!

Puit won't be alone on the bench tonight. He'll have his Masia buddies Cucurella and Miranda to chat with.

I'm not a fan, but it's weird he gets absolutely no minutes here.

This is my favourite Riqui Puig gif, because for a split second you get to see what he really thinks.
