I have seen him doing that a couple of times. Doing it on a consistent basis to force the opponent to avoid 1on1s against him would be the next step.
For me Depay is a player who is suited for a team that plays on the counter. He will have to adapt to Van Gaal who believes in possession football. But he got plenty of years ahead of him to do that.

I think he would fare a little better in the middle. I don't think he has the pace/acceleration to play out wide.

Wherever is best, he needs to play. Being stapled to the bench isn't any good for his development, especially if he starts losing confidence.

Hopefully he will get a start this week in the capital one cup game, he needs to regain LVG trust in him for his defensive duties. The talent is there but he needs to adapt to being a winger in a 4-5-1 possesion side compared to a wide forward in a counter attacking 4-3-3. I don't know why people expected him to come in and be a game changer at 21 coming from the dutch league, it even took Suarez 1.5 seasons to come from Ajax before he started being amazing for Liverpool.
