Roberto is better. Semedo has made his portion of mistakes at the back too. His positioning, in particular leaves something to be desired.

Besides, there's some hierarchy. You don't kick your established player to the curb just to see what happens.

All things considered, Semedo played good amount of minutes and he will rack up considerable figure until the season finishes.

Roberto is better right now, but long term he doesn't even pass the eye test as a true world class defender. He is lost in a true 1v1 defensive situation. Semedo knows what to do. Semedo has the sheer physicality, ball control, strength, speed, etc. Just needs obvious work on jumping in, getting over excited, build up, etc.

Patch work is not going to cut it anymore, and it looks like our board is finally starting to understand that with actual positional players.

Roberto is the last of that breed. He is not a RB, let's not fool ourselves. Alves was a special talent at bombing forward, but he was sound defensively. Roberto is not. That's what it boils down to.

Semedo has been good defensively in the last month, while Roberto has been a bit suspect defensively in last few games. But he brings so much more than Semedo attacking-wise, that I can understand why Valverde is starting him.

Semedo tracks runs back well with his pace but the positions he takes up he still looks unsure.

Roberto has been fine defensively, makes more tackles, interceptions and gets dribbled less.

You sound as if something is wrong with our defense. They work just fine. And no Roberto is not RB just like Mascherano is not CB. :)

Umtiti is also LB. Would love to see him play there at Barca one game just for giggles.
You will get some of this.

Still completely hapless in offense. Doesn't do him any favors, that he's never had time to build any chemestry with a right side that's constantly being shifted around, though. Still, I expect more.

His positioning is all over the place, gets sucked in too close to Pique all the time. And the less said about his offensive play the better. That Messi literally has to tell him where to move is enough.
