Nelson Semedo

Coentrão went for 30M seven years ago.

I agree we probably shouldn't pay 40M for Semedo though.

Alex Sandro is a better player than Nelsinho IMO and he went for 26m euros. 50m for Nelsinho is lunacy IMO. 30-35m max.

But fullbacks are cheaper. Cancelo went for 15M - a comparable case.

Of course it is relevant? It says something about how much other clubs have paid, and if it is a reasonable price.
Maybe Kyle Walker breaks it, but he is a very good PL-hyped player shifting between two rivals. Are we going to pay nearly that, for a young Portuguese fullback from a club that produced Coentrao? No, it is too much, and we should insist on a lower price. For f****** once we have all the trumps: guaranteed playing-time, that is very rare.

World record fee isnt relevant. It is the current market that is relevant.

If Kyle Walker goes for 50m the week before Semedo does for 40m it has no relevance on the fee that it is no longer a world record whereas it was the week before.

If Semedo goes for a world record fee and no other full back breaks that this summer or next then it would mean something in terms of how high the fee is.

True. Why would you even compare it with a fee paid a decade ago? Prime Alves would cost 80m. these days anyway. If not more.

Myth. Best players in the world is not even bought for expensive fees. They are spotted, developed more at the club and stayed during WC-peak.
They myth about "you have to pay the prices of todays market" is bs. Maybe if you want Bellerin, but you are always able to make good deals for low amounts of money - it happens all the time too, people just forget that.

Bayern needs a rightback as well. What will they do? They tried to sign Henrichs, a young upcoming fullback for cheap before he extended at Leverkusen. Now they could probably use Kimmich as fullback - a near WC-player bought for 8.5 M€ - but I guess that is just the prices you have to pay today for a solid fullback?

You are saying that with hindsight and it was two years ago.

Can pick and choose examples to follow.

If someone says Semedo is better than Coentrao and Coentrao went for 30m in a much smaller market to justify paying 50m it doesnt mean anything either.

Not a myth.

Alves was bought for a huge fee and even now is still one of the most expensive full backs ever.

If a fullback was recognised as being one of best in world and was realised the type of player they were teams would be paying massive fees for them.

Totally different argument to saying ll full backs will be expensive and no bargains to be found. No one is saying that.

True, the idea that we must splash ridiculous amounts on someone like Nelsinho to compete is very narrow minded.

At this rate we'd end up with Roberto and Vidal again because we shouldn't pay to buy anyone really.

Smell the coffee people. The prices have went way up. English clubs, oil clubs, chinese clubs have inflated the prices. Us and RM too. Smaller clubs know that we are one of the 3 richest clubs in the world and we are in dear need of specific players in 1 or 2 positions. They aren't forced to sell their players for cheap. We don't pay X amount for Y player then another team will. After that we're left digging again and be left being content with second rate players because we were to tight to pay 5 or 10 million more.

Nah, this is a myth. There are always options. Ricardo Pereira is said to have a 25m release clause. Perhaps we can get him for 20m? Who knows. Fabinho would be more expensive but is also extremely versatile which is a huge bonues. Sidibe was available for 15m euros last season. He can play both LB and RB. We chose to ignore the RB position and instead signed a pure non-versatile LB like Digne for the same price as Sidibe would have cost us. Lots of mistakes being made. We are not savvy actors in the market and must improve.

Not a myth at all.

What did Ricardo Pereira do to show he is worth 25 and to be a Barca RB?

They throw a 35mil bid from Manu away because they want 40mil. So I don't think that we can lower the fee. Bellerin rumoured much more than 40mil so do we have another option if we want a RB? In a normal world we must have other options, the board had plenty enough time tot scout rb's the whole season.
