Our previous Portuguese players:

Luis Figo: 1995-2000. 249 appearances and 45 goals in official matches. He won six titles. But despite being the team captain, he went to Real Madrid.
Vítor Baía: 1996-1999. 55 appearances. He won six titles. After coming to Barça from Porto for the 1996/97 season, he went back to Porto in 1999/2000.
Fernando Couto: 1996-1998. 63 appearances and two goals in official matches. He won six titles. After coming from Parma, he left Barça to go to Lazio.
Simao Sabrosa: 1999-2001. 71 appearances and four goals in official matches. He won one title. He came to Barça from Sporting, then left to sign with Benfica.
Ricardo Quaresma: 2003-04. 30 appearances and two goals in official matches. He won a title. He also came to Barça from Sporting, then left to sign with Porto.
Deco: 2004-2008. 164 appearances and 23 goals in official matches. He won seven titles. He came to Barça from Porto, and then left to sign with Chelsea.
Andre Gomes: 2016-
Nelson Semedo:

Till now: Figo was a success, but he turned into a traitor in the end.
Quaresma, Simao, Baia were failures.
Fernando Couto was average and Van Gaal forced him out.
Deco is Brasilian with a Portuguese passport.
Andre Gomes is, well, Andre Gomes.

Till now, without Deco, our success with Portuguese players is 1 out 6 (Figo).
Let's hope that Semedo will break the spell.
Portuguese at Barca spell is almost as equally as horrible as Barca&Arsenal and Barca&Valencia spell.

Coincidences more than anything. If there was a huge gulf in mentality, climate and culture, I could've bought into such a pattern, but not when we talk Portugal and Catalonia.

Deco played in Portugal his entire senior career up until Barça, so I don't think it's fair to exclude him either.

Baia and Couto looked great until we signed him. Surprise, surprise.. like pretty much all Portuguese players from Portugal league nowadays. Simao and Quaresma were younger and treated like wonderkinds but again.. Fail.

Needs to be said that we almost signed Kopke (best gk then) but already had a deal with Baia who just started to look shaky when we closed the deal.

1-We have been successful with signings from Valancia, Alba was great, without Villa we don't have the amazing 10/11 season and injury cut his career with us short, Mathieu was good for price and role he was signed for. Paco in 2nd half of the season looked good to at least wait to judge the transfer. only players who failed in last 20 years were Gomes so far and Gerard Lopez who was actually not a bad squad player for 5 years if it wasn't for injuries and team being a total mess back then.

2-We got Gio and Henry from Arsenal. so even Arsenal we can get good signings from

3-I am not sure what history have to do with this, it is cherry picking tbh. I mean for starter I would judge more based on signings from leagues not nationalities specially when it is Portugal and Spain, raki point about the league is more valid, and football is an ever changing game, things that happened over 15 years ago shouldn't be used to predict the future. When Simao was signed Calcio was the biggest league in the world, Wenger was one of the top coaches in football, we had 1 CL in our history, Pep was still playing.
That will make sample size extremely small to judge

4-If there is anything that I am gonna worry about Semedo is how he is going to fit in an attacking team like as and more importantly about the fact that he will be 24 this year and basically player only 1 season in top division

Can someone explain how good he actually is? Looks goodish from his YT clips.

he was a true legend and kept us competitive at a time we probably shouldn't have been (we were at the level of Depor, Valencia and they would become better than us once he left). People are just butthurt because of how good he was, but I always understood his decision and his feeling of not being appreciated by the club. His teammates at the time respected it and still respect him today, like Pep or Lucho.

Look at it from the bright side: we're not underpaying our stars anymore, so it's unlikely we lose Messi

Simao and Quaresma were younger and treated like wonderkinds but again.. Fail.

For younger fans: Simao Sabrosa and Ricardo Quaresma aged 18-19 were hyped as the best wingers in the world.
Simao Sabrosa was supposed to be the next Luis Figo.
Quaresma was also supposed to be the next Luis Figo.
Quaresma was rated higher than Cristiano Ronaldo when we bought him.

Today's analogy would be: Simao and especially Quaresma were something like today's Dembele.
Here is a young Quaresma aged 18-20 at Sporting before joining Barca.
He played like an alien and looked like a no brainer (he played both as a Lw and a Rw):

And then when he joined Barca, he dribbled like an idiot, ruining a flow of team, and ending an action each time when he got the ball either with dribbling past 4 opponents or shooting at goal by himself (there is a similar guy with a similar playing style in our current team, hmm):

We lost patience with him after only 1 season.
12 Months earlier, he was the world's biggest potential.
12 Months later, Barca gave up on him.

Think he meant Semedo but could be wrong.

None of these former Portugese players are relevant to this transfer.
