That is exactly what they are. They are privately owned. On top of my head I cannot mention a single English or Italian top division club that is owned by socios (club members). This is more a Spanish/Portuguese/German concept if anything.
Yes, there are some similarities but it won't ever end as badly even without Messi. Barça and RM have grown so huge (two most famous and most followed clubs in the world with the 2 biggest economies) that they will likely never fall to such lows nor be allowed to do so.
