Valladolid sat back and that we expected so it further puzzles me why Koeman uses him as central forward.
We're winning so I guess RK is just sticking with what's getting us results lately. I could understand using this formation in tougher away games but not at home against lower table teams. Dembouz has now scored in two consecutive games so Koeman will like that and continue playing him as a CF even if it's evident he's not suited to play there.
It's not like we're all that much more solid defensively with 3 atb. Valladolid could easily scored twice yesterday. And we're limiting ourselves offensively trying to play through the middle as much and depending on just Alba and Dest to provide depth. Alba is the second most frustrating player to watch. Sure, he's provided a lot of goals and assists but has also f*** up a lot of attacks always looking to pass to Messi. Dest had some good games but overall he's still inconsistent so I don't like to put that much importance of our attacking success just on them. And we're also missing De Jong moving around more and coming into opponents box which he's done well at the start of 2021.
There is a lot to like about Koeman's work in general. Mostly, he's given a lot of valuable minutes to the youngsters which is the most important thing in a rebuilding/transition year. I didn't expect us to win anything before the start of the season and even less so after a rough first few months so I'm pleased we still have realistic chances for a domestic double.
I'll also give him credit for going away from his prefered 4-2-3-1 after a few months when he saw things didn't work and we've started to play better as a result of that. And I also like that he recognized our defensive problems and tried playing with 3 atb. We could argue that if he'd drop 4-2-3-1 a month earlier we'd now be 5-6 points clear at the top of the league and if he'd play 3 atb against PSG (instead of trusting Pique) we'd probably still be in the CL as well but it's also not fair to blame him for everything. He's not responsible for invididual defensive mistakes and attackers not scoring clear-cut chances.
My main two complains about him right now are:
1. He should be more tactically flexible. As said I don't mind using 3-4-3 in tougher away games if this gives us more stability (though I'm not sure it really does but we'll see in El Clasico). But in games like yesterday he should go back to 4-3-3 that's been working quite well since New Year.
2. Lack of trust in his bench. Right now we have our "once de gala" and not much behind that. Sure, Fati, Pique, Roberto and Araujo being out longterm limited our options but players like Trincao, Braithwaite and Pjanic are good enough to start at least some games. It's hard for them not playing for weeks and then being thrown in late in the games expecting them to do wonders. Give them an occasional start or two to keep them "warm" and rest starters (who are often overworked).
It's probably too late in the season to do that though as basically every game from now on is like a final so we'll continue to play the same 11 players every week baring injuries and suspensions. At least we'll probably get Araujo, Pique and Roberto back soon which will give us some more options in defense and midfield. But offensively we have what we have. And I think we're not utilising that talent the best we could so hopefully Koeman will figure that out as well.
