He has explained it after the Sevilla game:
He is the fastest one we have, so he plays him up top to push the last line of the opposition so as to stretch the pitch vertically.
Messi can't do that. Griezy can't do that.
The only other player who is remotely able to do that is Braithwaite
I think Koemans tactical explanations are often strangely simplistic, things you would hear from a lower league manager. I don't like them and think they are outright wrong a lot of the time.
Messi and Griezmann wants the ball on their feet alot, but they are of course fast enough to stretch the defence if they want, anyone CAN do that. Griezmann SHOULD do it more and do less of the jogging back to the midfield, Messi is right in wanting it on his feet.
I think Dembele is a very dumb player that needs a very simple task to focus on from where he can sometimes improvise. Maybe this is the reasoning, that Koeman of course can't say publically...
I always thought Dembele should just hug the line, but so far he is doing ok centrally, as there often is someone close to him that can cover his mistakes, and he is (a bit strangely) better in a small space than a large space, as he is so sloppy but at the same time both good technically and very awkward. His best position is still the bench I think.
