Philippe Coutinho

This guy coudn't do shit against bottom league teams in Spain, and you think he can do in toughest league in the world?
I would like to concede L on this statement, but there is like 5% chance he will do anything worth for Aston Villa to make them trigger buy option.

He is small, low stamina, slow, mental midget with one trick.

The reason his price was so high was the fact that he did well against those teams in England. He was decent for the first few months here but than lost his way. Coutinho and Hazard need to be big fishes in a small pond. They can't hack being another player. Having said that alot of players have come to Barca, played second fiddle to Messi and lost their confidence.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Aston Villa will pay 65% of Coutinho's wages. The player has given up on the remaining 35% of his wages, meaning Barcelona won't have to pay the Brazilian any wages whatsoever during his loan spell. [<a href="https://twitter.com/tjuanmarti?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@tjuanmarti</a>]</p>? barcacentre (@barcacentre) <a href="https://twitter.com/barcacentre/status/1479514751570956292?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 7, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Whoever is doing the negotiating at Barca they appear to be doing a good job.

That bit about him giving up 35% is surely BS. He can't be as desperate to go play elsewhere, Xavi was giving him minutes, so why would he just willingly give up 1.5M on his biggest contract?

But maybe that he's agreed to a bulk sum payout to be released in summer or something
Then again makes no sense provided there's an option to buy in the loan deal so guess not

Why not If it means he gets to play one last world cup? Maybe even win it.

He's still getting called up without playing here last I checked so needs that final push, impressive performances in a small team

Aren?t his statistics at Barcelona rather similar to what he accomplished at Liverpool?

You are correct. Tho the main difference is the assists.

Barca
Games 106
Goals 25
Assists 14

Bayern
Games 38
Goals 11
Assists 9

Liverpool
Games 201
Goals 54
Assists 45

Inter Milan
Games 47
Goals 5
Assists 4

What is noticeable, is his figures when he arrived at Barca:

7 goals in 18 games In his first half-season.
7 assists.
Add 2 goals and 1 more assist in the Copa Del Rey
Total of 9 goals and 8 assists , in his first few months at Barca.

Did injury then set him back?

How he does at Aston Villa will give us more clues as to why things went the way they did. Many factors contributed, I feel. Injuries, constant criticism from the press and fans alike, long loan spell away from the Camp Nou equaled never really gaining momentum again. His high price tag and wages demanded he perform from day 1. Pressure! All of these factors may have contributed to a mental block. I say may to be diplomatic, eh! 😃

I think it was a wise decision to move to a middle table team in England for a short period of time. Significantly less pressure at AV. He?s player in the EPL before so he?s familiar with the language and the culture. He has former team mates there, friends, etc. Gerrard clearly admires him as a professional and as a player, so he will also have the full support from the manager. Something he hasn?t had here.

His best season at liverpool is when he scored 13 goals not sure what you can expect from him.

One of those players who shines at midtable clubs, so he should get his name ringing again at aston villa or there is no hopefor him

Agreed. This is a critical point in his career.

He was supposed to be replacing Iniesta, so goals should not be a criteria on which to judge him by. But he was crap in everything anyway.

But it appears - just going on stats - he wasn’t when he arrived in the opening months. 18 league games 7 goals, 7 assists. A striker would be happy with that.

I am not defending him or his salary.

He had a good first 6 months apparently, unfortunately I wasn't able to watch Barca at that time so I didn't witness it.
